Fitting Heated Grips

Perhaps slightly off thread, but just spotted these handguards for a T on AF1:-

But at around £125 it's a bit steep.

I'm just not a great fan of heated grips; I've found they heat my palm but not my digits that well.
Handguards, on the other hand (sorry, couldn't help myself on that!), not only do they keep all that winter cack from the roads, rain etc away from your hands but also massively reduce wind chill. Look much better than bar muffs which I only ever get out in really cold commuting conditions (below 0c), 'cos they just look awful, are clumsy, and it's just not right.

According to AF1's website they're not available until 15 December 2010.

The more I think about it, the more I'm very tempted - a Christmas present for my beloved T!! Yeh!! There's an idea. :D

Agree with you comments about wind chill etc - a bit expensive compared to fitting heated grips - suppose the right solution is to fit both
 
You're right, Mike. Fitting heated grips AND guards would be the way to go.

I've just come back from the local Aprilia dealer and no other Aprilia handguards fit the T. The non-carbon ones with AF1 are $199.99 plus delivery ($60)plus import VAT (£29.80) (duty exempt as below £135). That brings the total cost to approx. £190 for handguards alone. I'm stalling a bit at that price, but even so I'm still seriously tempted. I've had too many days of freezing digits.
 
Mabe the parts will become available in the UK at a more reasonable price

I'm hoping the heated grips will help fed up of having to stop because I can't feel the brake or clutch lever - even with winter gloves and thermal linings - crap circulation in my hands
 
Well I've slept on it, had a good look at Acerbis guards as well, and sod it. I've bought the AF1Racing guards - they just look so much better. My T deserves the best anyhow. Not for everyone, and no doubt I'll take some flack, but hey, I've had it with numb hands / digits commuting through every winter and also being limited by time / distance when i really want to ride for further / longer when out for a play.

Just remember everyone, before the missiles start flying, they're for winter only and will be coming off in warmer weather.

I'll post some pics when fitted to really upset you all.

Yep, thought about that. I've read a few articles regarding that issue and reckon if it does happen it'll only be at high speed i.e. over 90mph - and in winter, given the state of the roads around here, that's v. unlikely. I'll keep everyone posted. They're at UK Customs as I type.

hello,

new to Tuonos and to this forum, but thought i'd add:

I commute on my Gen 2 , so after dousing in AS 365, I fitted Oxford Sports bike grips. I used a relay and took it from the number plate light. works a treat!
I stuck the thermo control box onto the "fairing" by the l/h front headlight bulb.

one thing i did find was that you have to trim your throttle grip, other wise teh heatd grip acts as a clamp and will stop the twist grip moving freely.

i can post photos if anyone is intersted.

Sorry taken so long, might still help someone, even though warming up. I used Oxford sportbike grips.

FYI - I will tape up everything later!

I took relay feed from rear light, note colouring for +'ve and -'ve.

Only issue is i cannot always see the LED lights on grip control unit. but you can still change the bulb

The connectors for the actual grips are the best place to enable full turning circle and no interference. will water proof when i can be arsed.
I put relay and control box behind battery. I used 4 pin relay just because it's what the car shop had! that's all crimped in properly

Oh yes - as someone else says, you need to trim spines on throttle sleeve, else you will in effect clamp it to the bar, and it will go all stiff! I didn't shave the inside collar of mine.
