first ride - and first impressions of tuono

Well the snow had melted and the roads were nice and dry, but it was feckin cold out..but i couldnt wait any longer, so i rang the shop and told them i wanted to pick up the bike

35 minutes later, i was at the shop ready to ride away.

it was outside, so i popped the key in pressed the button (choke on) and feckin nothing! would the begger go!!? no would it buggery!
10 seconds later = flat battery :thumbdown:thumbdown

so as first impressions go i wernt impressed. i knew they have problems in this department, so i will take it with a pinch of salt. The guy said it was cuz of the cold..but he will order me a new battery just to give it a good chance.

An hour later...plugs cleaned up and a jump pack, +a squirt of easy start down the airbox and she fired in to life. louder than i remembered in the shop, but as with all twins..the louder the better. it sounds alot better than most v-twins with standard exhausts.
To get to my house from the shop, i had to navigate my way round some very slippery city centre roundabouts..which was intresting saying that i havent rode a bike of more than 600cc for 3 years..and the on/off throttle response of a twin at first made me think i was riding like a gayer!
Brakes are good and sharp. the suspension at the rear is very stiff and the front feels very weird after riding supermotos for a few years. Almost like it needs dropping through the yolks half inch and the softening up a tad to make it tip in abit cleaner.
I have to say, riding the tuono feels abit like riding a horse cuz im so short.

A couple of things i have to ask is.. on the rev counter the light above MAX starts flashing at 6k revs..is that normal?
Secondly, when i first saw the bike in the shop the speedo read in mph..and since thebattery went flat it is now in kph.
how do you change it back? cuz i cant concentrate on converting speeds!

and they did the service on it like thay said, but on the advice of some of you guys it looks like once the bike is warm...there is abit too much oil in it as it almost goes to the top of the pipe.how do u drain abit out?

just cant wait for a warm dry day so i can really give it a push!:thumbup

1. Get yourself a Yuasa YTX14-BS. Nothing else will do.. honestly. Really impressed with mine.
2. The Yamaha starter relay seems popular.
3. The light is a shift light. THis can be set wherever you like in the rev range with the A B C D buttons on the dash, along with MPH/KPH.

You have the download of the user manual ?

check the 'How to' forum - all you need in there with regard to the clocks. I had an 03 Mille and also changed the battery to the yuasa.. Hope you enjoy the bike

When you flattened the battery the dash "reset" - if it happens too often the Odo can even zero.

Oh - and get an optimate or similar, and keep it plugged in when you aren't using it.
The dash uses a small amount of power 24/7 and the engine really needs a lot of juice to spin it over.
The battery Weeksy quotes is actually OEM on the Caponord - for some reason they fit a smaller one to other models.

it's a HUGE beast i must admit. But fits under the seat perfectly. Just need a 'spacer' under the battery bracket.

I found a socket works perfectly for this task.

I've fired it up twice in the cold weatehr and it's instant... just touch the button and it's running.

Can't recall mate. I'll try and find a link..

HEre you go... for now here are the bits you need.

cheers bud...that was nice and easy!

bike has been sat outside all night and day today undercover..and its been snowwing..so its cold and she started first press of the button! Which makes me feel abit more confident in the bikes reliability (touch wood ;) )

took off the big *** wind sails they call mirrors, and sorted the clocks. and gave the bike a thorough look over..as you ussually find summat you didnt see when you bought the bike.. and the only thing i noticed was that the bike is near mint, and is super clean condition for a 7 yr old bike.

next steps are to relocate the front indi's as they look abit daft stuck at the top when there is a nice bracket at the bottom?
purchase a stubby moto-gp style carbon race pipe, and to sort a back tyre.

send impressions are....poop!

went to start it again today..first stab of the button..flat, and the fooker reset the clocks.! Gggggrrrrr pissin me orf..but saying that the battery is 5 yrs old, so we can hazzard a guess at that being well and truly foooked!

You can change the battery if you want, but if you don't keep it on a trickle charger it will be too flat to start the bike after about 10-14 days.

My mate Windy was around here this morning - we are now can coring experts :lol (or not ???)

but we were talking about batterys. We both sold our 05 Tuoldo's back end of last year with their original batteries. We had the occasional reset - in my case usually because I hadn't remembered to plug it in once parked up.

I cannot stress how important it is to keep V twins on a trickle charger - a mate with a Firestorm tells me they are exactly the same. Low battery, click, click - dead.

only problem is, mine is left outside..away from any plug! = no chargy chargy!

if i was to take the battery off after every ride would that work? or..if its used every 4-5 days, would it work ok then?

Ebay, Solar charger. £13.

Easy peesy. Change the crocodile clip connector for Eyelets and can hardwire then. Run the cable back through seat and it's invisible until you pull it out for plugging in.

Doesn't need direct sunshine, just out in the daytime etc.

3rd impressions of the bike is that its a piece of ****.

brand new battery, (yuasa ytx14-bs if i remember correctly) and the fooker still wont go.
had it a week and i have got it running once to get home from the feckin shop. To tell you the truth, it aint worth the hassle at the minute..i dont know how you guys can live with the bikes failings.

i took the ecu lid off to see what chip was in it in case it had a race chip in it on a standard can and all its got on it is 549euroc, which i presume is standard.

i did try earlier with a half flat battery(old) with the choke on and it wouldnt go, so im hopping that it flooded itself a little (if thats possible with F.I) and when i go to start it tommorow, it will have dryed out and will go first press of the button. if it dont..its going back to the shop!

am i missing summat?

Well first things first....

Do you have fuel in it ?
Do you have a Multimeter to get us some info on the voltages on the battery with ignition off, ignition on?
Do you have a charger ?
Does it jumpstart off a car ?
1 trick is to use full choke and hold throttle fully open (be quick letting go though) to start if having problems.

Seriously mate, no point ******* about on one of these with a half charged battery, it's either a decent charged battery or don't bother at all.

it wont start with a fully charged new battery either.dont have a multimeter, and havent tryed jumping it off the car as the battery is new.
when i picked the bike up..they couldnt get the fecker going.they cleaned the plugs up, sprayed some easy start in the airbox and jumped it off what looked like a van battery..and it took alot of pursuadeing to go.

what will putting the choke on and then holding the throttle open do to start it? isnt that kind of the opposite reaso for having a choke on in the first place??? :dunno

it really has pissed me off enough today to make me wish i had bought the speed triple

The answer is... i dunno... however it just works mate and that's all that counts.

Just because you had a new battery doesn't mean it was or is fully charged. We don't know what it was putting out then, or putting out now.

I'm not going to ******** you and say they're perfect at starting, i'd be a liar. However once you get the niggles sorted, they do seem to start first press of the button.

Mine left me stranded on the 2nd trip... i sort of lost faith straight away like youself. However, i'm past that now and onto happier pastures
