Fault diagnosis on dash?

My bike has conked out going down the road, pull over, press the switch and it fires up as if nothings happened. RSV Dave has said there's a way of getting a fault diagnosis by pressing the buttons on the dash. Anyone know how?

2 seperated connectors under your seat area mate, simply connect them together to get your fault code, dont forget to disconnect them when your done, the should always be disconnected unless your checking for faults.

just tried it and it comes up on the dash with No 1 so gonna see what that is now, thanks again.

there isnt a fault code 1 as such, someone had this problem a while back, ill try and see if i can find it mate.

needs to be in diag mode to show an error code when the fault occurs. It's not retrospective so will not show stored codes from previous events. as soon as the ignition goes off the code is lost from the dash mode

with no faults apprant it will show TPS position.

cheers for the replies guys. It happened again today so went to the local bike shop and they had a look and he said it might be the ecu box cause it's loose and jumping around. So gonna try and secure that tight somehow and go for a spin.

Am I right in thinking that you shouldn't ride the bike in diagnostic mode though? Seems a bit daft not to store the previous faults.

Took it out, it stalled once then started straight back up as usual. Got it home turned it off, had a ***, tried to start it again and nothing at all. The EFI flashes and then just that noise from the solenoid. Gave up and rang a garage who are picking the turd up later. Thanks everyone for the replies. Let you know how it goes.

Now would be the time to check for a fault code. while she is playing up, and the EFI light is flashing

Yeah, thats what i thought but it came up No 1 again, oh well, it's in the garage getting fixed now hopefully. Let you know when i get it back.

The idea of diag mode is to display which part is faulty when the bike is in the fault state.
It doesn't actaully alter the state of the ecu as that monitors faults all the time but just enables the dash to display them in realtime as they get detected. Riding in diag mode won't hurt it but it's really meant for running the bike up in a workshop or attempting to start a non starter to see if the ecu detects a component failure.

Even the later bikes with the CAN system can only display faults in realtime. it requires the Axone to display stored codes.

Job done! Apparently it was a loose connection to the starter motor. Cost me 75 quid to find that out, anyway, she's sweet as a nut now. LONG LIVE THE RSVR!!! (until next time anyway!!!) Thanks.

least it was only a bad connection(yeehaaw) and not Sprag, s motor, tip over sensor etc etc.
My ecu boxes flys aroud underneath the seat aswell. Prolly cable tie it in there now.
God news aniways bud!
cheers Ck

Reading some of these posts makes me think I've a good one..Had it 18 months and put 12.000 miles on it, the only problem up to press is the back brake..
Regarding Jap reliability though..My R1 ate its gearbox at 13,000..ZX9R Blew its head gasket at 18,000..
Hondas the best of the Japs..

true mate,my 98 r1 fookd its box up to,was just tongue in cheek remark,
i love my rsv to bits, itll be even better once these little niggles are ironed out.
spose its more a downside of buying 2nd hand and private than the bikes fault.you never know what numptys had your bike before you or what theyve done to it.
once shes how i want her, itll be ok.im lucky compared to most, not had any non starting issues or diag codes or cutting out ect, itjust needed a good prper service, which it had last week and now ive a little clutch fluid leak which has taken 90% of the bite from my clutch.
no big deal and shes gettin sorted this morning so shoud be sound after that,
(famous last words lol)
