Out with the boys for a weekend in Whitley Bay (wild) and after a heavy Friday night was ready to set out for Holy Island on a fine sunny Sat morn. Pressed the button and all I got was very slow revolutions and a lot of clicking from the starter relay. Obviously a flat battery??? Come on lads give us a push let's bump it off. Much cursing and gasping for breath later....nothing. Call the RAC. Sorry mate, your starter's got an internal short, an your local Ap dealer has no stock (of anything apparently). Recovery. Sunday strip down the starter motor. It's full of carbon dust, like **** loads. Clean it out. Charge the battery. Press the button - BINGO. running good as new. I'd not heard of anyone else having this problem but its worth knowing about. 2001 Mille with 11 thou on the clock. Its got a platinum chip and goes like sugar off a shovel. Ride safe. Like hell........... but safe.

Glad you found the problem mate - but where did the dust come from (i.e., what's grinding away in there?)

Its usually carbon from the brushes in the motor, "they all do that sir" hence why you have to replace the brushes when they wear out.

Yeah that's right Beanie, it surprised me how soft the brushes are.

I noticed a while back when looking at a parts list that there is a an upgrade kit for the starter.

I didn't pay much attention but could be different brushes ?. there were no pictures to show what the kit included.
