Exhaust valve problems

G'day mildrob.

I traded my 14CapoTP back in 2017 after two great years of riding. I know from members on the 2014-2017 Caponord 1200 forum that the exhaust valve must be adjusted correctly or it will give fault messages, and may trip the "limp home" system. As far as I'm aware this can only be done while connected to the Aprilia diagnostic tool, so is not a DIY job. Maybe it could be done if you have the Guzzi-Diag tool?

My servo cables stretched out of spec and had to be replaced, but the mechanic put longer ones meant for an Arrow exhaust that had it's own Ex-up flap. These longer cables had to have more bends to fit to my stock exhaust, so my servo eventually stopped working from the extra strain. I only noticed that the bike didn't do it's usual 'whizz-whirr' pre-start check, but I was still able to ride 150kms home with the exhaust flap stuck in the open position with no error messages. It didn't affect performance and I quite liked the extra thump in the idle note. Nobody knew much back then, so the servo was replaced under warranty, but I wish I had installed an ESE as I quite liked it without the exhaust flap.

Most owners get rid of the ex-up flap as it's only purpose is to help the bike pass dB limits at a certain rpm. Unlike the older style Ex-up valves which were needed to help an engine run properly under 5k rpm. Modern bikes ECU maps do all that work now. I currently have a KTM 1290 SDGT and I have fitted an ESE and left the Ex-up flap in the horizontal (low flow resistance) position and have no issues with low speed performance or error messages. It's also not noisy as I have kept the cat.

The Healtech ESE was the go-to fix when the servo motor failed, so I wonder why your Capo didn't like it. There may be something else causing problems.

Have a look on the other forum - there's plenty of activity there and many owners who have changed their exhausts will respond with advice......

PS....... I once lubed my cables by spraying some lube into them from the Ex-up end (while still connected) as the cables must not be disturbed once set at the correct tension and valve position.
