ERR message on dash

Hi

New to the site, but have owned a Mille for about 8 years (relatively) trouble free until now. Currently I have a 2005 RSVR that for reasons best known to itself is coming up with 'ERR' on the dash. The sidestand light stays on, headlights come on etc, but no fuel pump prime sound and nothing happens when you hit the start button. I am trying to resolve this myself without submitting to an expensive dealer/mechanic situation. Seems to be a common(ish) problem and having read various threads on various forums, seached t'internet for clues/answers and tried calling dealers, there are plenty of suggestions of possible solutions I am still confused. I can find lists of fault codes, answers to said fault codes, what to do if answers but, lets start at the beginning, where is the damn diagnostic cable that is supposed to be under the seat/to the right of the seat/next to the battery??? And more to the point, what does it look like? It seems to be suggested that there are two unconnected wires but I cannot see/find any cables that are not connected. The only cable I can see is a (capped?) three pin plug. Is this the correct one? Please, please could someone offer some help or suggestion and, if possible, supply a photo of what it is exactly that I am looking for before I pull the remaining hair from my head!! Also, if the three pin plug IS the correct one, can anyone suggest a diagnostic reader/cable/software. :confused:confused:angry:banghead:dunno

Think diagnostic cable is on a gen1 sounds like you have a gen2 being 2005

From 2004 there is no diagnostic plug. Just a plug for the Axone.dealer only electronic tool...

Error codes can be displayed by holding the lap button whilst turning on the ignition and holding it for 15- 20 secs. It will only show current errors though not stored codes.

P before the number means it's a code sent to the Ecu which is not recognised by it's diagnostics.

the capped 3 pin plug is the diagnostic socket - you have a gen2 bike.
redratbike is correct, it can only be plugged into the older axone or the texa navigator TXB tools.

im a tech in a workshop in watford and i have a texa navigator tool, our hourly rates are much cheaper than main dealer rates.
if your really stuck we can help m8.

PM me if you need help

Err is a CAN bus error not a fault code.

Ecu is not talking to the dash 110%. Your challenge is to find out why, probably a bad connection or one of the multiple power feeds to the dash or ecu is down.

Take it to a specialist for Ape's, it will save you money in the long run. Diag machine will not tell you anymore than the dash already has for a CAN bus error. It gives the same fault readout of Err, nothing more.

Thank you all for your suggestions/help. I eventually tracked down the problem to a broken couple of wires. So, after hours of head scratching and swearing, the answer was alarmingly simple and a quick and cheap repair. Hoorah!

However, now I have a different issue. After using it all day to run around, I finally stopped at the local Tesco to pick up some dinner and when I came out, NO STARTY!!! Although turning over, there seems to be no spark. Eventually submitted and called the good old AA. The chap who came out was himself, a biker, and in the process of rebuilding his own (track) bike. He stayed with me for a long time and tested everything we could easily access. But to no joy. After about two hours got picked up and bought home. My question is, what could have just gone to stop the production of a spark? The fix for the 'ERR' problem seemed to be in two wires that lead to a relay, located on the left hand side, under the tail fairing. I can only guess that the other end of the cable (disappears into the loom) ends at the ECU. Could the repair be, in some way, responsible? I had various suggestions ranging from coil, leads, plugs, cam sensor and even the side stand switch. Any help would very much appreciated (before I find a dark field and a box of matches!!!)
