Engine variant 2 - worth adding a power commander?

Hi, I have a RSV-R factory 2004 with Akrapovic SP cans and have just had the engine switched to Variant 2, which according to the servoce manual I have will automatically switch the ECU to the latest map 2. but that's all the info I have. So engine variant 2 and map 2 are 2 seperate things clearly. I wonder if anyone can explain what engine variant 2 does other than use a different map, and is it worth fitting a power commander as well. The Aprilia dealer who switched it to Variant 2 said not to bother, but did not go on to explain why he helf that view. any info or links would be approceieted. thanks.

Variant 2 tells the ecu to ignore readings from the lambda sensor. (open loop)

The map associated with variant 2 sets fueling levels for the now open loop setup so that it's fueling is more aligned to performance than emmisions (variant 1)

That map version is only as new as the last time the ecu was flashed though. The dealer should regularly update the firmware of their axone which will include map updates. If the firmware is old the map might be old.

If your bike is on it's original map as shipped from new then it's out of date. All 04 bikes should be on map -664585 (file VD5L68A$.BIX) which came out in 05 and was included in firmware version 5.04 onwards. Axones should now be on version 7.01 although anything above 5.04 will be ok for 04 bikes
Genuine 05 bikes have this map from the factory.

Having set variant 2 and updated the maps to the latest version they should then balance the throttle bodies and away you go.

Do you "need" a pc3, no

Will it fuel better with one, yes but how much better depends to an extent on what other mods the bike has over oem and how much time the programmer spends on your custom map.

If your mods a minimal they maybe not worth it but if you have open airbox etc then maybe the gains justify the cost.

Personal call really.

Any clearer ?

Best thing to be sure is to get a Dyno run with lambda sensors, so you can at least see what the fueling is.
Funnily enough I can do this for £35.00
PM me if you are interested.
