10w40 is just a measure of the viscocity (thickness..) of the oil, 15w50 as aprilia reccomends is more runny, and my understanding is the colder the weather the thicker oil you need to protect your engine, so 10w40 is a good oil for uk as our winters are cold and our summers wet and rarely too hot, in italy tho im sure 15w50 is best

Yep, would echo Wolf's point, I've just changed oil in my bike & gone for Putoline 10w40.... recommended by a fellow Mille owner - quality oil and reasonable cost!

use what you want, it dont matter as long as you change it when you should

Bloody good point. I'm gonna swap to 10w40.
I never thought that the oil might be recomended for use in italy. I use mine for comutting in some cool weather.

Another plus point is my Kawasaki runs on 10w40 and I always have stuff for topping the bike up, I need to go out and buy some15/50 when I need to top the mille up

But is 15w50 recomended because Vtwins run hotter than Inline 4's :eatcorn

Maybe Griff or Spoonz can provide some advice ?

It seems that although Aprilia recomend 15/50 it is more advisable to run 10/40 in the UK, with no particular brand being recomended above all others ?.

The rating refers to the temp range at which the oil will maintain a working viscosity.

for example a 15/50 in theory has a working viscosity of 15 weight when cold and 50 when hot. They call them multi vis oils and they will actually change structure with temp to maintain their viscosity.
A W in the spec means it's suitable for winter use.

In general go for the oil with the narrowest operating range you think you will encounter.
the reason being that the additives they add to make the wide range oils work break down when hot and leave dirty deposits in your engine. some diesals can't use wide range oils for that reason as they burn more oil than petrol engines.

as a rough guide a 15w oil is good to -15 degrees and a 10w to -20 which i can't see many of you riding in if your sane.

I wouldnt say its more advisable to run 10w40 just that its easier to get hold of 10w40 than it is 15w50 :eatcorn

If you check the temp range of the oils it is very similar, i always use 15w50

The number before the "W" means winter, 10W is about −25 °C
and 15W is about at −20 °C if i recall, 15w50 having a higher temp range at operating tempertaure of the engine than the 10w40

As i said, change ya oil when you should and there will be no problem as long as you use the recomended MOTORCYCLE oil that Meet or exceed SAE grade recommendations.

:biggrin

Silkolene Comp 4 15w-50

Ester synthetics combat wear and friction on all critical load surfaces at high temperatures and during cold starts

Meet or exceed API SG, SH & SJ

Certified JASO MA.

Silkolene Comp 4 15W-50 Synthetic Ester Based 4-Stroke Engine Oil is an ester synthetic based lubricant which meets the needs of modern high performance engines, both with and without intergral gearboxes. COMP 4 15W-50 is a heavier grade engine oil designed to give excellent protection in higher ambient temperature conditions.

And yes i need to get out more :biggrin

Full is better for the engine, semi is better for the clutch.

I used motul v300 (sint) so far, but for next year im switching to motul 5100, because I heard recomendation from quite some people that it works better in rsv.

Also Aprilia recommends semi, but in theory sintetic should better :)

oil people will tell you that there is no difference in 'slipperyness' between mineral/semi syn/full syn but the synthetic is more stable over temperature/time and also changing oil to fresh oil will always 'show up' any clutch weakness as old oil does not lubricate as well (thats why we change it!) i use hein gericke 10w50 fully synthetic good stuff and quite cheap :)

stick with what you have always run. Clutches like consistancy in oil.

Never use fully synth for running in though or it will burn oil forever.
