Engine not shutting down after acceleration

Hi to all and many thanks for any comments or ideas in advance!
I have an '01 rsv and just of late, when i give her a handfull then back the throttle off the engine keeps accelerating for a second or so. QUite a scary situation to be in when your rapidly gaining on the motor in front of you! I disconected my pcIII but this has made no difference. Last year befor i put her away for the winter she only had this symptom on light acceleration but always shut down on hard throttle. Is it down to the cold weather or can anyone think what would cause this. Oh and btw, it doesnt do it all the time, just when you least expect it.
Many many thanks in advance....

If it was me I would have the airbox lid of and see what the butterflies are doing when work the throttle also check the cables aren't frayed and sticking or the return cables not snapped

Check the twistgrip mechanism, I had this with mine and it was sticking on full throttle. (Scary). Looked at everything from top to bottom and nothing made any difference. Then just slightly loosened the bolts which hold the throttle assembly and this solved it. They're still proper tight but this was where the problem was.
NB: I did go through everything and it turned out to be as simple as this.

Hi and thanks to all for the replies. I have done what everyone has sudjested. Think i had a problem with the throttle mech as i took it apart and lubricated it. Now it returns with a much springier action but time will tell!! Out on her later so will let her have it and see whats what. Thanks once again

Mate had the same problem and it turned out to be the two little screws on the butterfly where loose, not a lot but enough to hold the throttle open, quite a common fault apparently, worth checking anyway

A huge thanks to flash746. You are an absolute legend. Turned out to be the screws that hold the butterfly flaps were loose just as you described. All 4 of them needed tightening. Many thanks for your response.
