Well I've finally done it and put in my notice, so at the tender age of 57 I can throw away boots and maybe start to take it easy. Over the last 4-5 years or so I've been buying properties to let and with a bit of pension we should be ok, it really is a major step though after working for the last fourty years. Hopefully I'll have time to do some riding next year when the weather picks up

Good for you mate.
I had a cottage many years ago I used to rent to students, income was good, but they were all messy buga's. Sold it when they changed all the regs etc, would have cost too much to alter cottage. Bloody good investment tho.
All the best

Congrats and well done on taking the plunge. No harm in 'trying'. I guess you could always go back to your old line of work if things don't work out, or some other employment, if need arises, but hopefully you will never look back, except to see you made the right choice! Those who succeed the most are those who are prepared to take calculated risks and seize the future with both hands. I reckon that's what you've just done! :)

Very stressful time now, when you've worked fourty years it's hard to see another way to live

To start off I'd probably be at least as stressed as you mate. But remember, stress is in the mind, and can be managed. Work to a plan, and make sure you get regular stress relief, chill outs, etc. And "Why worry? It might never happen!" :). All the best...

Good luck mucker, hope it goes to plan.

58 and no intention of retiring,,,,,,,,,,,,I'm one of those mugs that loves his work. :yes

Where I was earning my daily bread it seemed that many of my comrades liked to take the easy option to a problem as in "leave it for Bill" I have trained most of them that are there and think sometimes it would have been easier to train a seal, soon a problem no more though

Good for you, fill your days with fun- screw working

I am starting to sew my retirement seeds too- in a few short years I will pull the pin and remove myself from the rat race
