Drain plug stuck

Did the oil change on the RSV only to get as far as the drain plug on the engine casing. Which had a round hole where the hexagonal one should have been. I've tried the correct hex key and it just spins.

Which doesn't fill me with confidence and probably means the last oil change was only partial at best.

Any advice on where to get a new plug and how to get this one out more than welcome.

Cheers

Chris

Welcome to the Forum!

To get it out you could drill a hole in the middle, carefully and use these - http://www.toolstation.com/shop/p51010

Or run the engine up to temp/or use a blow torch then cut a slot in it for a flat head screw driver..

Just done my oil change and I didn't know about this drain bolt :doh

Get a new plug from Aprilia dealer :thumbup to get the old one out try tapping in the next size up allen key or a star drive, the head of the plug may snap off (mine did) as they are quite fragile, this will do you a favour as you can then wind the thread out with your fingers

Star drive is the best option...I have try drill a bolt before and tapped with them tools(took 2 hours and 8 drill bits, just rubbish)
Use the star Allen key(less then 2 minutes)

Thanks guys

will try the star drive tonight and report back.

thats the way id go too buddy!
theres options before we have to break out the drill yet.....
good luck

This happened to me when I got my current mille. The cunning solution I came up with was to take some tin foil and experiment folding it into small strips (2 or 3 layers thick) similar to the flats on the hex bolt/ plug and insert the peices around the inside of the hex kind of flaring out so that you can then tap the allen key in with a hammer.
The foil is basically taking up the slack that's all. You should then be able to remove it no bother.
Mines is still like this as im to lazy/tight to fit a new one.

Hope this helps, Dave

Done,

had to drift it out with a mallet and screw driver as the star drives I had we're either too small or too large. Will order a replacement from e-bay with a hex head so it doesn't happen again.

Thanks for the help.

Chris
