Day in the garage

S

samgoon

Been raining all day, so thought I'd see if I could sort out my rear brake. Tried to bleed normally (caliper still attached), and it making NO difference at all.....infact seemed to be worse! Then took a printout of the "official" Aprilia brake bleeding guidelines to the garage, removed the caliper, held at a higher point and pulled through 4 or so reservoirs of fluid. A few small bubbles, but nothing too major. Brake lever actually started to feel a little more firm, so started to get remotely excited! Put everything back together, took it down the road.......and nothing! Slightly better than before bleeding, so maybe it just means the pads need bedding in after so long with them doing nothing! Have also left something heavy (not a brick!) hanging off the lever tonight to see if that trick works. Bit of spare time, so also put some heat wrap around the pipe. Looking forward to see if any of it works!

i did exactly the same felt really good in garage but soon as i went down road just the same ,hav to give it another try !

when I did mine last week removed the caliper and turned it upside down so the bleed nipple was at the highest point,
used a thin screwdriver to hold the pads apart a little.
pumped 4 reservoir fulls of fluid through and then slowly pushed the pads back to get any air that was in the master cylinder
seems to worked a treat so far,

I also wrapped the master cylinder and brake hose with heat proof matting

When I did mine
Syringe on caliper nipple crack open and suck the fluid out of the caliper being careful not to suck the MC resovoir dry, repeat 5 or 6 times, redo nipple up and then leave MC cap off and pump rear pedal fast for 20 seconds air will rise into the resovoir, leave the cap off and hang a weight off the pedal overnight.

I have a brake.

next mod that im gonna do is to make a heat shield for the MC and mould a tube that sits next to the oil radthat directs fresh cool air over the MC.

this must be sweepin the the uk , my rear brake has been non existant for a bit as well so thought i`d bleed it as well ....................................
what a differance even go so far as to say it`s now bloody good , don`t know how long it will last but v happy at the mo .

push your pads as far back as you can and jam open ie screwdriver etc , do the bleed procedure as already mentioned with caliper off ..................... best it has ever been .:thumbup

also drilled air holes in belly pan at master cyl area might help keep it a bit cooler :dunno and don`t look that bad either .

Best thing to do is remove caliper and tie wrap it as high as possible and leave it there for an hour to let the air bubbles move to the highest point, then bleed ..... this will remove all the stubborn air bubbles

leaving it hanging for an hour sounds like a good idea - will give that a go if the weight on the lever doesnt help.

Yeå and the brake lever "down" during the procedure. Did mine some three weeks ago and i still have a back brake even to that extend that it locks the rear on cold asphalt.

Pitty thw winter is coming....

Dot 4 & 5.1 is grycol based, fine for std. Aprilia brake systems.....Dot 5 is silicone based and not recommended for the std. Aprilia brake systems. Personally i would not mix 4 with 5.1 go the full flush out. I am running the Motul 5.1 and its very good in my opinion, however Dot 4 is ample for normal and aggressive :D riding style & braking.
