Dangerous issue with my 04 Tuono

Hey there

My new 04 Tuono has been great so far, bought it about 3-4 weeks ago. I have a problem with it that is quite scary and has happended a couple of times now. The bike can be a bit of a pig when cold. I dont know if this is a V-twin thing as it is the first one I have ridden, anyway what happens sometimes is when the bike is a little cold (say 60 degrees C) and I am accelerating through the gears I change gear and the engine cuts out. This causes the rear end to weave left and right and leaves a big black mark on the road.

This is a bit scary and the last time I was quick enough to pull in the clutch. I just press the starter again and I am away.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Woody

G,day Woody,
I never start riding mine until the temp is 75c or more. Most wear inside your motor takes place before ideal operating temp is reached.
Is the problem there only when cold, or is it all the time ?
Perry

Thank Perry, yes only when cold. Maybe I will now do the same as you. Wait a little while longer to reach the 75 degree mark.

I'll give it a try,

Thanks Mate

Daniel.

I sometimes start riding my '04 Tuono when only 35 degrees are shown. Mind you, that's only in town. Never experienced any problems like that. No spirited riding until I'm out of the built up areas by which time it's up to working temperature.

Hi Woody it could just be caused by a quick handful of throttle when cold, it's not like a Jap 4 and prefers to be fed in gently until 75+

Hi Woody.I start mine, pull on the helmet and gloves and ride off.Sometimes it still says cold, never any probs but I always wait till 75 before the fun starts

Hi Woody, Mine sometimes used to do a similiar thing but it cut out as i was setting off and not when riding....the best advice is to relay what the other guys say and leave it til it hits 75 degrees before riding.
I now let mine warm up before riding and have had no problems whatsoever since :)

Hi Woody. I've an 08 model and the same thing happend to me a couple of weeks ago. I had just changed the front sprocket to a 15t and went to see what it felt like. I only started the bike after I was ready to go (cold engine) when I changed from first to second the rear locked solid, I managed to pull the clutch in and then fed it back out and it started again. I **** my self and could not work out what the **** I had done to cause the rear to lock. I went over all the work I had done twice but could find nothing wrong. I'm glad you decided to do this post. Now I know It wasn't my fault, apart from not letting the engine warm up enough. Cheers

Hello!
I also have an 04 and the damn thing runs like **** when it's cold. That being said, I let it warm up a few and leave the choke on until I see 170F. Never have a problem if I keep the choke on to the point it keeps the revs up just a bit. Once warm, no probs. That kinda stuff is what you will come to love about that Tuono. It has a personality you just hate to love!!!! LOL:crazy:crazy

You'll love the bike, even with it's "uniqueness.":thumbup Grins from ear to ear.

Hi there,
New around here!

I have an 04 Factory, I just got it a week ago. I think it could run better. Is there anyone out there that has a Good Power Commander IIIusb MAP for an 04' with a single Akrapovic slipon muffler, highflow air cleaner..... thanks

That's pretty much my procedure as well. The bike does indeed run like crap until very warm. Can't tell you the number of times I stalled the *****, thinking "yeah, she's probably warm enough... I'll just shut off the choke now" :banghead

But, as mentioned, once warm, the most astounding bike I have ever owned :thumbup

I am certain that is these idiosyncransies that add to the intrinsic value of ownership without the trauma of a Duke. I didn't mean to sound pompous - apologies. :wheelie

I never had a problem. But, I start the bike, then zip jacket to pants, zip jacket, ear plugs, helmet, gloves. After all that it's getting pretty well warmed up. :rolleyes

You can turn you're idle screw a little up or get an eprom that fixes these low jerkiness !!

This was going to be my advice. In the colder mornings of spring and fall when it's starting to float around 0 C, I go out in my tshirt and start the bike. Then the rigamarole of getting dressed. Twins LOVE to be all warmed up with a little foreplay before starting to rock it down the road. THe shovel is the same way. Both stutter and *cough* if they aren't warmed up before riding off into the sunset.
Treat her like yer girlfriend or wife... get her warmed up first before you jump on and want to pound it, she'll be much happier.
