Cornering

B

BB1000

Was asked today by a newbie rider......"do you counter steer all round the corner or just the first turn in".....Now having riden bikes for over 15 years i had to think about this cos it just seems to be 2nd nature when cornering now

My reply was.....its a combination between counter steering and moving ya body weight

What would be your reply to this :biggrin :eatcorn

:thumbup hey bb you got it.and throttle controll and some trail breaking oh so much fun dragging a knee around a turn or simply just going through it .db:thumbup

It's the only way to get these buggers round the corners at speed, isn't it?

I agree, it's all about transferring your body mass, throttle control, and counter steering. Add in to this correct road positioning and the end result is a fook off big cheesy grin at the end of the corner.

Most people will be doing it whether they realise it or not because anything above 20mph ish and you would go straight on if you didn't.

Your right though that it's counter steer to lay her over and counter the gyroscopic force and then you hold the line with body position and throttle.

I am no expert by any stretch of the imagination but it feels to me that if you didn't countersteer on a fast bend you would highside. Imagine getting your knee down and then tightening the turn into the bend:eek:

My understanding is that counter-steering is what is doen ALL the time...which is why it's difficult to learn to ride a bicycle after you take the stabalisers off as the counter-steering effect comes into play!!

I went horse riding with no experience and fell off three times because horses are a lot more "upright" on the bends than bikes. Obviously you cant countersteer or get your knee down on a horse:horse but this does kind of support New Boots stabilisers theory that we actually hang off the inside whilst pointing the front outwards without even thinking about it:dunno

Counter steering, Pah!! use the rear wheel:doug

Ever thought about what you do with the bars, if you are tipping into a right hander, you pull up on the right clip on and push down on the left, you do this subconsciously, give it a try whilst thinking about it, it feels strange.

For the definitive info on counter steering, may I suggest you gents scroll this page up to the file vault at the top and immerse yourselves in Twist of the Wrist Vols I & II which someone has very kindly made available for download. (and no, it's not a manual on creative masturbation).

Youve just described normal stearing, haven't you :dunno

An example of counter stearing is when your going into a right hander and you can't push any more on the left bar, as your hanging off the bike, so you push on the right bar, that is where more of your weight has been transferred and the bike turns in (right) quicker the more pressure you apply.

My 2 p's worth, but what do I know
