Collector link pipe Mod

S

Sensei

Many may have seen / done this but thought I'd post some pics of mine after I finished it as couldn't find anything on here about others doing it .Not a bad job really just take ya time to get the profile of the hole & pipe shape right & then argon purge the pipe & weld it up , helps with HF pulse tig with foot controller so you can keep the weld under control . Put it on the bike & it really has tranformed the bottom / midrange power heaps as well as the top end is more harder pulling .This give a great improvement through the 3,500-6,000 rpm range where the single pipe Milles lack compared to the twin set ups so it gives you back the lost bottom to mid range punch which we all need more of . Pics show what it looks like done & where it goes on the collector pipe .

i thought this mod also involved a small second balance pipe from the rear down pipe to the large section around the collector?

Was planning to do this but want to get bike on dyno after my airbox mod first so i can see what mod has done what.

Yes there is Philandpa but those that have done it haven't found it was that good as it lets the rear header gas escape to quickly & not let it build up back pressure enough , seen as the front just goes straight out of the head , where as the back header has alot more bends to get a equal tuned length header . The front bypass link balances the flow by blending the gas into the rear pipe making a more even flow . Looked at a dual system not hard to make but would have to buy 2 quality mufflers & couldn't justify them when this mod works as good & was free .

Sensei, nice welding
i believe this nicely fills mid range and gives a nice power bump throughout

from the AF1 site i understand that there are good gains with a single balance pipe but this chap ('Kiddo') seems to think that a dual pipe conversion offers improvements?

"Here's an update on my dual crossover pipe. (See my photos in this thread.)

I have ridden it > 750 miles on twitsys, top end, highway cruise, city traffic, and city commuting.

It is working out very well. I was thinking about adding crossovers, but it is a lot of work on a stainless system to add them and then cancel them if it didn't work out. So I was pumped to read good reports from others in this thread and then I dove right in. I was skeptical. I didn't think I could squeeze any more power out of the combo I am running.

I was wrong. Dual crossovers are a substantial gain accross the rev band!
It idles smoother. City traffic driveability (smoothness) is enhanced.
Low to mid is stronger. Mid is stronger. Top end is stronger. Nose over is stronger. Geesh! I sound like a salesman but this is no BS - the motor loves it."

im not sure how much better (worse?) a dual collector would be?
but from what you have posted i'm interested in your mod

would you perform this mod for other members?
if i sent you a header, how much and how long would it take?
i have a 2002 RSVR and live in kent.

thanks

ah ha
bugger, just seen that you inhabit NZ
couldn't get further away from kent if you tried!

I think you'll find Sensei is in New Zealand squire. MHP do the single or dual mod here, but you are looking at £185 when I looked into it. I'd imagine a local engineering/welding/fabricating place would do it for less for you :thumbup

ok i've emailed MHP for updated prices & advice

is this a really good mod, has anyone else actually done it?
i've searched AF1 & here and it seems like a good substitute to an expensive 2into2 exhaust set up. despite the ape engine being low revving engine breathing seems critical (big piston V twin)

i've already got a hooked airbox and race can, is this the next VFM step in the mod list? (after gearing & chip)

after that it's onto 54/ 57mm TB + PCIII & set up - £700
gas flow, valves, cams, 1060 big bore - more than my bike cost!

better spent on track days, tyres, CSS

does anyone else know a competent welder that has already done this mod?

This is a very easy mod to do yourself with the right bits & good welding skills , The single pipe mod is IMO as good if not better than the dual as it gives both bottom & mid which the dual have plus it still has the big top end push plus more of the single system .

thanks sensei

it been a long time since i used the welding qualification i got when i was 16 yrs old! i think i'll leave it to someone with some current practice, the only problem is i still know enough to appreciate that most garages' welding is crap and won't trust them with my headers.

single connection sounds good from your comments and will be cheaper to get welded too.
did you ever get your bike on a dyno to see if the boost matched the power increase you felt on the road?

As said before, a local engineering/fabrication company would do it for alot less. Might try this at work, I'm not a welder but we have a few, nice freebie!
Just visit your local industrial estate, theres always on somewhere!

Did mine last year, pick some spare exhaust systems of ebay for £20,& then got some bends of a TRX system that I had crashed,If you can get the pipe,& cut ot to fit, this is the time consuming bit,& if it's done already,a welder is happier to do the job for free, also make sure youve got clearence on the rear balence pipe, mine turned out to be only 1mm when fitted,Im must get round to doing the other systems that are in the garage loft, but gotta TL1000 to to straighten out & sort, because its been sat still for 2 yrs

i have had this done by mark at mhp , when i first looked into it the problem from getting done else where was the grading of material for link pipe , i`am not a welder so don`t know what difference it would make , i assume it just makes it better for welding to original pipe and whether it contracts and expands the same so as not to crack :dunno
i had front and rear mod done by mark excellent work :biggrin
it was around 180 quid and you may have to wait a bit cos he is v/busy boy .
but worth it ? ................:doug

ok vince now that's a top tip but i'd like to tap you for some more info:

1. is this mod worth bothering with? did you notice appreciable power gains?
where abouts? low/mid/top

2.what diameter link pipes did you use? same size as rsv headers? does it matter?

3. are the connector pipe shapes that important? (i've seen straight & curved)
or is it the fact that it connects in the right places?

i'll look for some stainless pipes pipes in ebay and do some chopping

comments appreciated
thanks

good point mr nutts as you can gather i am no welder either. i could just about swallow £180 but not if i need to buy a 2nd set of headers on top as it sounds as if the bike could be off the road for a while then waiting for job completion.

i like the sound of a woohoo but a bit more info on performance would be interesting to me. would you call this a vfm mod for 180 sobs?

what were the low/mid/top gains like? just noticeable or proper yeeharrr:biggrin

does your bike also have the usual pipe/chip/airbox mods or are you running biggers TBs also.

mhp does look top quality but if i could get something similar for a third of the price i'd give that a go 1st. having said that i bet his maximises performance.

thanks

to be honest mate i don`t know the stand alone gains are i just seemed a good call as i could not afford the twin akro route the link pipe has been said to give the same gains as twin sys , this is what mark (at mhp) confirmed for me as he has done extensive testin on this be it a couple of years back but he deffo knows his onions,
on mine i had a list of bit`s that i wanted ie........chip ,zorst ,air box mod , 57`s tbs, linkpipe mod was in with the exhaust bit so i just got a s/hand link pipe as you only need the bendy banana bit not the headers , then down to griff`s for set up -pc111 and custom map end result was 125 horses and rideability so much smoother and a bit more grin factor :biggrin.

p.s mark did say that you do still loose power with the std headers but it is all about how much you want to spend and how far you want to go ......:eatcorn

Gents, i ve been looking at offering modded headers for a while ,this is probably one of the cheapest performance mods £ v BHP you could make ( a hooked airbox being the other)...there is another longer thread i started off a few months back with more pics and info....

i would offer them on an exchange basis ..where you pay a surcharge which is refunded when you return your header to me,that way your bike would be off the road for the minimum amount of time.

i have a coded welder using tig as per SENSEI on board who specialises in pipework and will hopefully be ready to go in a few weeks, i have 2 to 3 headers at the moment that i can get modded.

i'm in 2 minds to offer both link pipe mods or just the one shown at the beginning of this thread..obviously having both link pipes would cost more in both materials and labour ...

watch this space!:thumbup

your thoughts please gents

Mark your a star sir.

I am very interested in this mod, when we last meet i was impressed with your sketches and plans thus far. How are the jigs coming on ? Will you be able to adapt your jigs to perform this mod on the twin systems to ? Another forum member taking up the challenge.

Great stuff Craig :thumbup

Hi Craig...the jig is taking a bit of time to perfect..need this sorted to keep the positioning and quality control constant....

the twin systems vary between manafacturers so i'll have to have a look into these on an invidual basis but i cant see why not..

also i've now found there are 2 types of headers 98-00 and 01-03 so looks like i might need 2 jigs or make an adjustable version so i can have both welded on the same jig...this really is the only hold-up

Great stuff.

I will be looking forward to a update thanks Mark.
When you have perfected the jigging post up as i will be interested cheers in advance Craig :thumbup
