Clunky gearbox.

Was out a few times this last weekend and the only thing spoiling an otherwise good blast over 500miles was my gearbox jamming up maybe two or three times each day, sending my pillion lurching into my back. :banghead

It's happened enough times that I know it's 4th going up into 5th, but it's when not totally revving out hard on the upchange nor when gently short-shifting/cruising up the gears....somewhere between the two. Otherwise it's fine. No amount of lever tugging or unloading/rolling off seems to make it snick in, therefore making me look a tool. No sniggering you lot! :rolleyes

I generally do clutchless upshifts, or gentle one/two finger little pull on the clutch. But even clutch right in, off the throttle it wasn't happy.

Is this the start of something sinister? What do I check now?

57 Tuono R, 5K-ish miles. I've just fitted ASV shorties last week, but it happened occasionally before that anyway.

Clean the fluid, check chain for slack (sat on) and gear lever linkage . (lube the chain and check front sprocket (Cog)

Haggis, if you've just changed the levers it might be worth checking the correct adjustment on the pin that presses into the clutch master cylinder. It took me ages to get mine right after changing the levers (using the same measurement as the old lever did not work)

What rusty said, it's easy to get it slightly wrong and could cause the problem you have.

I always use the clutch for upchanges, I know it's safe enough to do clutchless changes, but can't bring myself to do it.

I have adjusted my gear leaver so that its positioned slightly low from my left foots natural position.
That means when I change up, I tend to hook my toe under it & have a real positive movement, clicking it fully into the next gear.
It might feel a bit strange at first but seems to have reduced my missed gears / false neutrals problem a lot.
Down changes are not affected.

I thought the gearboxes were just like that.Mines always been a bit crunchy from new.I was hoping the 'box would get smoother with age/miles,but it's still the same.

May have to send me the gear levers to look at. Will have to test them for the next year or so - just to give you peace of mind ;)
