Clocked

Pulled into a filling station and got talking to AA man who was having a coffee and into bikes. Got talking about buying and selling, the Falco being relatively new. He asked me if the bike had any history thrown into the deal, said he mentioned it because 'RSVs are dead easy to clock'. I was a bit surprised, not least because I assumed it would be a plug and play job as with all digital mileometers.:dunno Never got to the bottom of it as he was called away, but obviously it did make me wonder ???

I'm not asking for chapter and verse lol, but it might benefit a few people who are buying (and have doubts) to confirm if there was any truth in his assertion. Or not.

maybe he was referring to the '04's problem. If you disconnect the battery it resets the odo. Not sure if it is all or just isolated ones though

Hmmm, possibly, he did mention older models. But I got the distinct impression that this wasn't confined to a single year. Dunno if anyone else knows anything about this, like I say useful to get to the truth on this one.

Update: just heard from RSVR owning mechanic/MOT place who confirmed that some older ones do reset when battery disconnected.............he can't remember the year(s) involved, could be 04 likw you said. Given all this I'm a bit surprised it doesn't seem to have cropped up before.......

Yeah this is unfortunatly a really common problem. i've suffered myself. like you have already said. if you disrupt the power supply to the clocks eveyrthing resets to zero. the only way to get it back is by running a wave generator over the speed sensor and trick the bike into thinking its going effing fast. Mine got reset in the garage when they were fitting a tracker as standard practice is to share the power supply with the clocks. i was gutted when i went to pick it up and 6700miles turned into 4!!!

All i can say is make sure the mots and service book all add up. use common sence if its showing 500 miles but the bike looks like ist gone round the world then run away

Pull the plug to the rear sensor when you start riding in the spring and connect it back up in the Autumn and your bike will do surprisingly few miles or you could remove the chip and pump the eprom for the details its not hard if you have the kit.

Is the RSV any different to any other bike? That’s a No then

I would not advocate doing either of the above but when you look to buy a bike IMHO you should disregard the clock completely if they have a “Low” mileage.

Buy bikes on condition you just cant hide a hard life

.... most bikes dont reset the odo to zero when you disconnect the battery lol

Yes and no. To be fair, it seems he did have a point........

Might be useful to try and figure out if the disconnection/flat battery thing applies across the board to particular years..............

It applies to some 04 bikes I believe, that's it.

This is a commonly known problem on the newer 2003.5 and 2004 model RSVR and Factory. If the battery is disconnected then the odometer resets back to 00000. It was a warranty issue at the time and clocks were replaced under warranty. There won't be many bikes out there now that haven't realised this problem. It's amazing how many very low mileage 2004 RSVR's are for sale so buyers check the history carefully
