I've had my RSV just over a week now and went to check the oil when I got home last night. Problem is, I can't see the level? I know where to look and I can see the max/min signs but the pipe looks so dark that I can't see any level?:confused

Obviously this worries me slightly that the reason I can't see any level is that there isn't one to see!!!:dunno Is this just me being an absolute ***** and missing something really obvious or what?:confused

Any tips would be welcome!

did you check the level a few minutes after you got home or while the bike was still running (before you turned the bike off) ?

I've tried to check it twice - both times after a 20min ride (to work & back) and I've looked at the site tube after turning the engine off and getting gloves & helmet off (approx 1-2min). Is this too long to wait? Would the oil have drained from the site tube?:confused

Thanks for the responses so far.:thumbup

The difference between seeing and not seeing oil in that tube can be as little as 20ml of oil, I checked mine this morning and had to add a very small amount to get it up to the normal level.

Make sure you hold the bike upright when checking the level too and if you still can't see it then add in small amounts until you can.

If the oil level pipe looks too dark as you say, it may well be full of oil, when they are not showing oil they are quite light due to the silver foil background sticker attached to the oil tank.

Like I said before... Why shoot blanks :D, post some pictures up and it will stop the guessing

What about sticking a piece of clear pipe in the top and using it as a dipstick?

Insert pipe, place finger over top of pipe and extract read the level. Jobs a good one!

The old ways are always the best.

If I don't solve this before I get home tonight I will do this Dolenc - at work at the moment without my camera!:thumbup

I've just been to have a look now (engine cold, been stood since 0750 this morning) and it looks exactly the same as it did last night when I checked and it was hot - site tube just looks very dark/black, no sign of a level?:confused

What i am trying to say is if it is overfilled and the oil is dark you will not see a line as it is filled too full, certainly worth checking, as amb said this will be easy to determine if you just dip the tank

Sorted. Checked as soon as I turned the engine off tonight and it was 2/3rds full.

Thanks for your help everyone.:thumbup

Must say, this seems to be a very friendly and helpful forum.:biggrin

for more accurate reading, don't turn your engine off when you get home. leave the bike running and while your sitting on it, get someone to have a look at the level.
