changed oil... big difference

don't know what oil the other owner had in it... i put 15 - 50 in it and i can now find neutural 80% easyer and it runs smoother aswell... it was semi-syn
 
As we should change the oil regularly in any case that was an added bonus for you!! Don't you just love one chore solving 2 issues!!
 
gotta do mine as its new to me,and you never know when the last owner did what and when.what make did you use pal?
 
Mine has only 3,000 miles on the clock, (I did 2,000 of those last summer) its on a 55 plate. I bet mine woud benefit from fresh oil. I think that is my Sat afternoon planned
 
i used 3 and 3/4 liters of formula moto tec 4t 15w- 50 semsyn... it was 11$ canadian a liter... 8$canadian cheaper then the other 15w - 50 ....

heads up... when putting back on the second oil drain plug.. don't torque it to hard... i broke mine off.. lucky for me my shop had another one... :biggrin
 
is there a preffered oil,mobil1 ect for the milles?
and is 15/50 the one to go for,i know they need semi synth.
 
I thought I'd get my oil a little nearer home this time but 15/50 isn't stocked by all dealers. A lot of them stock ?/40 and my feeling was that as the weather has just turned hot the viscosity at the top figure is more important. I rode over to my usual place and got the 15/50 semi synthetic. The brand doesn't really matter, just the '15/50 semi synthetic' bit. There are people on here that use fully synthetic but rumour has it this can cause the clutch to slip. Additionally it's more expensive!
 
My understanding is fully synthetic oil is fine, but if you mix fully synth with part synth (or worse.. mineral..) you will get some major clutch slipping, i was told after a while it sorts itself out though.

Each time i have done oil changes it made a noticeably huge difference :biggrin
Did think it caused my clutch to slip at first, but that turned out to be hydraulic fluid in dire need of replacement.

I personally use 10/40 part synth and think it works well enough here in the relatively cold UK, i wouldnt ever use it in mid USA at summer though... the viscosity rating you should use really depends on the temperatures you usually ride in.

I also found i couldnt get 15/50 oil anywhere but online and my local aprilia dealer recommended the 10/40 i currently use and assured me its what they use on all their bikes.

I have been warned a few times not to use Halfords own brand stuff in milles (or any high powered bikes?) because they add something to increase mileage which can cause the clutch to slip, which is the reason you are not supposed to use car oils in bikes... so cheap oil is not usually a clever idea
 
changed my oil and filter other day, i only just got the bike so wanted somewhere to start from, mine changes gear easyer now, but a bit of a fuss to do.....k and n filter comes monday
 
how hard a job on these is the plug change?
i need to do a mini service,oil,oil/air filter and plugs.
gunna swap the chain and sprocket after,1 down on front,2 up on the back ect.

not sure how it is on the older bikes but on mine its easy stuff, air filter is super easy to get at.. just lift the tank n remove the airbox lid, oil changing is easy enough, take the side fairing off and drain it all out.. easier if you have warm oil (preferably not so hot your hands melt when you touch the oil..) but i generally leave it for a few hours to drip out, the filter has its own little cover which unbolts easily enough and the new filter just pops in, putting the new oil in can be a tedious (or very messy if you hurry) job and dont forget to make sure you dont overfill.

spark plugs were a serious hassle for me at first but i have since managed to get them out without doing anything but lifting the tank, if i remember correctly it tells you how to do it in the aprilia workshop manual (pretty sure i saw a link to it in the file vault)

chain and sprocket change, what fun, i did that recently, you gotta take the rear wheel off n mess around with the sprocket carrier etc, i guess its not the worst job but it can be time consuming and dont forget to wash it properly or you will stickier than a chimpanzee who took a bath in the local tar pit

you wont regret changing the gearing though :thumbup

Bike in the pictures is a Falco, but that makes no difference, same engine and procedure as a Mille.

My local Aprilia dealer, Jim Allans uses and recommends Putoline Syntech oil.

As I said to you earlier, BIG UN, last oil change I did it was Putoline Syntec 4 15W/50 I used. It's due an oil change again, so I will be using the same stuff this weekend.

Keep in mind that recently, Aprilia changed the design of the oil filter to a longer one ( better filtration properties ) and if you are going to do an oil change anytime soon, check that out when buying the filter, because if you get the longer one, you will need the new and modified filter housing cover. You can still get the shorter/older filters so if you want to stick with them, then thats fine ( thats what I have done - didn't bother with the new type ).

on my 05 RSVR you can quite easily remove the spark plug without removing the airbox, you just need pull the lead off (ok so its not easy but its not impossible..) and use the spark plug tool from the bikes tool kit, i find it easier using my own spanners than the one provided though.

first time i tried to get at them i took the airbox off completely then felt rather stupid when i got the plug out the next time

think i read somewhere the older bikes have 4 spark plugs, not sure though!

what all needs changing to get the newer filter? is it just a different shape cover on the filter housing which bolts right on?

Hi lads.. changing the oil on mine tomorrow ready for Le mans GP, spoke to a friend of nine that works at the rocket centre in burnley, their an aprilia dealer, he said semi synthetic 10/40 this is what they always use.
