I want to change my front sprocket to a 15T from 16T but I gather that I will need to buy the correct sprocket for my chain pitch. I don't know the pitch of my chain but will there be some sort of markings on it to tell me? From what I've read 525 pitch chains seem to be the most common fitment?

yup 525 for the mille. Tho you can go to 520 if you wish(lighter chain), it will spin up quicker, not chamfer 190/55's, but prolly not last as long as the 525.
I ride in all weathers and do loads of miles so I have stuck with the 525.

Have a look on the chain links, I think it should be stamped 525 or 520 on the link plates :thumbup

525 is standard fitment.

quick hijack sorry! so standard is 17/42 with 525 108 chain? right?
if I buy a 16/44, what 525 length would I need. some people say I would get away with the 108 and others say 110?
Not going to skimp on the chain but if I can get some cheap sprockets to start out. any pointers to good places?

108 links will just make it..i run 110, still heaps of adjustment.

yeah, I have normally run 110 links, this time I have 108 its tight but it certainly makes the wheelbase shorter--yeehaaw.
Dont scrimp on sprox matey, cheap ones will lunch their teeth before the chain wears out. Stick with Rethal, afam, talon or such like.
