Hi all,

I tried the 2006 CBR1000 sidestand I bought of ebay at the weekend:

Here's the cleaned up stand next to the original:

Looks a bit long doesn't it..well I found it was a bit long:

Knats fart anyone?

So it needs shortening, but by how much. I tried testing my rough guess of about the thickness of the haynes manual by seeing the angle with the good book under the back wheel and a couple of publications of equivalent thickness under the front:

Now that's a healthy keel angle and no mistake :pirate

So, to the surgery:

The foot is at a funny angle and you have to get it right when you cut - well see if I did or not soon! Getting the foot welded back on tomorrow and I'll update when I get the stand back on.

Took the shortened stand / foot to get welded this morning and here's the results:

Looks like I got it about right. It's a good idea to take pics of it before you cut it to help you get the foot on the right way so it lies flat on the ground when it's down. I also got a blob of weld put on so the stand doesn't bash into the fairing when you put it up.

Woohoo - it's absolutely solid now and I can take it out and not worry about it falling over! :doug

Looks like a good job mate.
Excuse my ignorance but what's the issue with the original stand? My 2000 Mille was a bit dodgy but my 03 RSVR sits fine - I've never thought it might fall over.

I put one on my Tuoldo at the weekend and feel the same spence it does sit too upright. How much for the welding by the way. The reason I did mine is that it felt that it would fall over in a heavy wind

Hi Mumbo,

The original was crap - the bike stood too far upright, but also was able to move around, such that it could easily go over the tipping point. With this mod, the bike is leant over a bit more and is more stable. Now you realy have to pull it to get it up to the tipping point.

J180 - I know a bloke who I take my car to. I gave him a tenner. It was only a ten minute job.

Cheers..

Fair enough, as I said I never had that problem - maybe cos I used to have my back end quite high. Anyhoo, looks good mate.

Europe and USA stands are not the same, that's why you from USA are confused what is the problem with our sidestands :D

I bought a USA model side stand from Florida Motorsports. A complete unit was $270 and fitted straight on.
My gen2 is now rock stable and I don't worry about leaving it on unlevel surfaces.

My 2003 RSV sits OK on the sidestand too

Personally I think it's ridiculous to manufacture a different part like the side stand. I can understand a different fuel pump or exhausts etc for different regions and laws etc but a bloody side stand!
The USA one is rock solid, my old pitiful UK one is in a box somewhere.

Can't remember which one, but there's a US state that has a regulation that the stand must be up to supporting the weight of the rider AND a passenger, which is why it's as well made as it is.
I imported mine for about £50, then ebayed my old one for about £25....so it was a fairly cheap fix.
But in my case it was like shutting the stable door after the horse had bolted

Ah right that makes sense.
I preempted the bike falling over early on, it was so unstable. Right from when I first bought it I was worried. I bought the after market bubba one one here and it was fine but no where near as solid as the OEM USA one.
I got my dad to bring it back in his suitcase from Florida, he was stopped and searched ha ha Customs saw a weapon type shape in the X ray and all hell broke loose. He was not amused.
$270 for the complete unit, 5 minutes to fit. Perfect.

Just done this today - great info here. Bought an 05 fireblade stand and it does go straight on. Mine sits fine without chopping any out. Glad I tried if first before cutting it. Old kill switch just goes straight on too, but my switch was iffy so I spliced the brown and black together and used the cbr switch to control the light. The stand needed a new locator hole drilling for this though as the Honda one showed the light when it was up and light off when down :dunno.

also did the fireblade stand thing the other day. Also found that it doesn't lean over much more (if at all) but the bike does now have a larger footprint which makes it a lot more stable and I don't fret about it every time I put it on the stand. My ape switch promptly gave up the ghost so I just bypassed it. Job done.
