Carbon bits questions

So I bought a pair of real Aprilia carbon ears for my 02 off fleabay a few weeks ago for $160USD. They were listed as used but "like new" condition. One looks great and the other is faded as ****. I tried buffing them and waxing them and still no good. The faded one shows in certain light that there had been a Pirrelli sticker on it for some time and I presume removed for sale. I was thinking of reclearing them to bring the gloss back but am somewhat hesitant as I don't want to **** them up. Anyone tried this and had any success? I bought an Aerosol can of Rustoleum brand "Crystal" clear to apply. Thoughts or advice? :dunno

Don't think there is much you can do there. As far as I know the finish is as it comes from the mould....but maybe someone here knows better..good luck

PM Boyler mate, he works with Carbon fibre so will be able to tell you all ya need to know, i do know there are 2 types of Carbon, one fades and goes a brown colour and the other type stays lookin as good as the day it was made, on yours i would say the fading is it turnin the brown colour so laquering it will make it shine but not change the fading colour :thumbup:thumbup

Hiya Mate

Its really difficult to advise without having the ears in front of me ..... :dunno

I'd say that they have been coated with a gel-coat rather than lacquer .... Chances are the faulty ear has been subjected to loadsa sun or been polished with something thats reacted with the gel-coat.

Your cure is really :

Rub them both down with 400 grade wet n dry .... careful not to distort the weave pattern.

Get them lacquered .... strongly advise professionally, you wont get a decent finish from an aerosol tin. The problem being the carbon being black retains heat which softens the aerosol finish ..... you'll end up with flies embedded in your lacquer.

Please guys ....... when buying carbon items for your pride and joy ..... avoid gel-coat finishes cos there sh$te.....

alternativly buy your carbon from Mr Boyler here. I have seen his work and bought some, uses top quality raw materials/compounds. outsatnding bit of craftmanship at rock bottom prices. You can see his work at the Aprilia day on the RSVZone stand. He may even have some ears on the stand too.

Thanks for all the answers guys. Since these are Original Aprilia pieces, does that give anyone an idea of what type of carbon or finish they are? I guess I should have bought new but it was stated "like new" so I took his word for it.
