Hi guys if you could help me it would be much apreciated!

Online on phone as on the road so will be brief.

While riding my new shape 04 rsv'r it cannot make it's mind up what temperature it is, 44 65 74 50 then after about ten mins the engine warning light comes on with the EFI and shows 135c, so I turn it off and on again and it resets back to normall no warning lights but still
fluctuating temperature?

what should I check? Maybe thermostat? Any help would be much apreciated!!!

Thanks guys Ollie c

Thats what i'd check first...is there a connector block for this you can get to :dunno i dunno :dunno

Yeah, sounds like a temp sender unit having a fit or the terminals have got wet and are shorting out.

Check the connector first then check the resistances across the sensor and compare them to those in the manual.

Cheers guys, out camping atm do no manual's or anything, anything I can check now? It's a 20 mile trip home so wanna make sure she's all
good run.

Thanks again Ollie c

Yes cooling fans are working, where the temp is changing when I've stopped the automatic choke kicks in, then the fans then the choke, it all over the place, also the fans are constatlu on when it shows the efi and hazard warning lights untill I restart it then it resets back to around 60-70 c

Thanks Ollie

I would say sender unit as it sounds too sporadic. The fans would cut in at a low temp if the electronics are saying higher if that makes sense.
How long has it been going on for?
Have you ridden out in the rain lately?
Have you checked all of the terminals are tight?
Keep us posted when you sort it and good luck mate

defo sounds like temp sender unit.

you won't be able to do anything with it other than check the connections. A new sender me thinks will cure it:dunno

Yep coolant level is all fine, Finnish work at 3 so will ***** then, anyone know where this temperature sender is?

Cheers Ollie c

Why dont you unplug every connector you can find inc under tank one at a time and spray with contact cleaner .nowt to lose ............

UPDATE!!!!

so today i changed the oil and filter fo its anuall 3000 mile check, went for a ride and then it diddent register ANY temperature... i was keeping it below 4000 rpm for the first 10 mins then i got stuck in a sticky situation and had to give it abit more, upon doing so the front came up slightly and then down again maybe a little harshly as i slotted back into the traffic, as i looked down its started registering temerature (59'c) and slowly rising (up to about 71-72 after about 10 mins) stoped off at a friend for 20mins and when i turned it on as it used to it registerd about 50'c and slowly rose normally up to again 71'c... all seems fine now that i have changed the oil...

the reason i did change the oil in the first place as it was bellow the low mark and wanted to make sure it was all fine so rather than just topping up replaced all including oil filter.

maybe that was the problem... going to go out tomorrow again on a little bit longer to see if its still playing up or hopefully not aye!!

p.s. who said wheelies wern't good aye?:pirate

Just a quick not I had the same problem on my 01 turned out to be just connector that had vibrated out pluged in again and no problem since well not with that anyway.

It sounds like the jolt has made the bad connection good for the time being, you need to check the connection to the sender unit, it is worth sometime pulling of fairing etc and pulling all connections and spraying with ACF50 to prevent corrosion and reduce electrical problems

the nippon denso temp sender is a known week spot on 04-06 bikes. Aprilia superceeded it with a new type Bosch unit as they original failed so often.

Have alook on the left side of the rear cylinder head and if the sender is blue it's the nippon denso type.
The bosh unit is green and has a different connector so uses a new type little loom that you splice in.

My original sender did the same thing as yours and eventually the bike overheated as the sender would never register enough temp to turn on the fans

Spoonz - for future reference, does the temp sender unit control both the gauge reading and fan activation, or is there a seperate fan actuating switch on the radiator or somewhere else?

There is a thermostatic switch on pre 04 bikes seperate to the ecu/2 x engine temp sensors but not post 04.

There is 1 sensor and the ecu controls everything based on the temp sensor readings.
As well as turning on the fans it has a staggered map which will richen the mixture with higher temp. From memory there are 8 stages to the map dependant on temp/throttle etc so as well as a fan issue with a duff sensor, if it's reading low then the bike will run leaner than it should at higher temps or vice versa at lower temps as the ecu is getting duff info.
