Cam chain rattle ???

It did it yesterday, only briefly after a long ride out. I stopped for fuel and restarted the engine and it rattled briefly. It hasn't done it before or since and the performance of the bike is unaffected

Anyone else had this ? TV4 APRC 2012 with 10k miles

Its a common issue with the earlier models, The cam chain tensioner is hydraulic and takes a moment for the oil pressure to regain to push the tensioner out again.

Nothing to worry about, Just a little irritating.

Thanks Gav, I was worried that my wallet was about to be opened in dramatic fashion !

Luckily not, The later ones have a pressure lock system so it doesnt allow the oil to just drain out.

Can be a tad embarrassing when youre leaving somewhere in style though eh?

Only the 1100's have the non return valve for the cam chain tensioners.

The "fix" for the 1000cc V4's is a "non metallic washer" basically a rubber washer the is fitted behind the tensioner so that it doesn't retract quite so far when the oil drains from the body of the tensioner whilst the engine is off.

Unlike most Jap bikes you can't go down the manual tensioner route as we have two and they are inside the motor.

I am having both of my tensioners replaced with new ones and the rubber washers while my inlet cams and followers are being done as the they will be accessible then and the rattle on hot startup annoys the **** out of me :thumbup:thumbup

Mine does it it rattles like a skeleton in a dustbin having a w*nk
