went out for a ride in the sun tonight with a couple of mates on my 08 Factory when the engine went down to one cylinder, then the dash lit up with warning signs and the word SERVICE in big letters along with a warning triangle, so i pulled over to be greated by **** loads of smoke coming from under the tank and the sound of something burning and spitting:eek

lucky it went out but the bike wont run anymore, its booked in to the garage tomorrow for a look see to find out the damage and see if its covered under warranty

well pissed off, hope theres some good news tomorrow

Jeez! Is this the dreaded 'brown connector' problem I wonder?

where is the brown connector, i have a black melted plastic lump down behind the frame on the right hand side of the bike, just under the tank where the carbon side pannel meets the tank

if it has 3 yellow wires in it, probably black now then yes that is a known problem, lots of info on the net. I removed mine and replaced with crimps.

****, never good but could have been a whole lot worse if she had gone up completly.

Here is hoping its not too bad.

So youz out there know the problem.Does that mean CTD only has to switch out and replace the brown connector with the fixes posted on this forum and she'll fire up or has there been damage done and the bike needs breaking down?
I am assuming that's why a number of you have suggested replacing it out before it happens.

Jay it could be something other than the brown connector. The bike needs to be checked out properly to locate the reason for the breakdown. Italian electrics aren't to the same standard as say BMW,
Good luck CTD

spoke to the dealers today and it turns out the black molten blob behind the frame used to be a coil pack, no damage to the wiring harness or anything else
so they will replace BOTH coils under warranty, good news
bad news I've gotta wait till the parts arrive
oh well could be worse, i could be paying for the repair myself

AFAIK the "Brown Connector" is the one on the reg/rec which lives under the RHS panel on the rear sub-frame. There is a second at the alternator which is inside the plastic boot on the wiring loom near the alternator. TBH I never had issues with ours, but as posted there is loads of info on AF1 about it.
