took the son out for his first outing since passing his test yesterday on his R plate Thundercat even put a decent tool kit under his seat in case he broke down or things needed adjusting however I did not expect the T to be the one parked at the roadside :no
things were looking good and the cored satin black Aprilia Racing cans sounded awesome until we stopped and the T would not start again :bawling
the symptons seemed to all point to a knackered battery however after sitting at the roadside watching numerous bikers go by and chain smoking for half an hour she started again :banghead
after getting the T home i was informed that the problem may have been caused due to running the bike on map1 with cored cans causing the pistons to overheat and the engine to tighten up due to running too lean thus giving the battery a hard time trying to turn the bike over! took the cored cans off and refitted the stock cans and went back out with no problems. will get the mapping changed and try again next week (where is the best place in the North East for this?)
after all the commotion it still turned out to be an excellent days riding and look forward to many more like it (without the breakdown!)

if ye kin be ersed commin up the way, theres a boy in dunfermline, 5 miles from the forth brig, called eddie,,,,hes a ducati specialist, but he was recomended tae me by 'griff' as they used to work the gether, he fixed ma tuonos fuellin **** up when it got its pc111,,,,,,,, he wis spot on,,,,an as i said, recomended fae griff,,,,nuff said aboot him :):thumbup

cheers seany, bit far to travel but its good to know as i will be in that area for a few days in June (Moffat) should i have any problems

the saga continues and I now have 3 different prognosis'
1 original as posted, overheating due to incorrect fuelling and possible loss of compression :rolleyes
2 overheating due to a blocked cooling system plus a damaged battery (showing 14.4 on volt meter) :no
3 a mixture of the above plus a knackered sprag clutch :banghead
can't comment on the overheating as the clock was misted up :dunno
any helpful comments welcome :yes

Hi m8, cant see it being a loss of compression, the engine would spin over easier if compression was low, the bikes sensors should control fuelling anyway. IMO always start at the easiest fault first, battery. The clucth can be a weak point on the T's if its been abused, but go battery first, check charging as well. Why do you suspect a cooling system blockage? fD

When you replaced those hose clips a couple weeks ago are you sure you did not put silver ty-raps on instaed of propper Jubilee clips.

Cheers dude just when i am in need of support the humour comes out!

Thought sprag clutches made a knocking noise when they were going and caused by people trying to continuously trying to start the bike when it doesn't want to or by people not holding their thumb on the starter long enough for the bike to fire up.

Doesn't sound like a sprag clutch to me but some some mechanic hearing about it and just suggesting it.

Maybe phone up Griff and ask him. Advice is free and he'll speak over the phone. Said to me he's always willing to answer questions over the phone but after 4 is prob the best time of day.

Yep,check yer battery first.Check the voltage with a multimeter at the battery terminals,....not on the dodgy reading voltmeter on the bike.
re.overheating, did you notice the cooling fan cut in?If you replaced the hose clips recently,...did you drain the system?Mebbe got an airlock or something.
Start the bike and let it warm up untill the fan cuts in,....should be 105 deg C,iirc.
You will know when the sprag is on its way out,....usually makes a clattering sound on start up.

cheers guys your assistance is greatly appreciated and i will keep you updated :thumbup

the plot thickens :dunno
bikes been at my mates shop for 2 days and had every diagnostic going and no faults found :banghead
just to be on the safe side have fitted a new battery and had the shims adjusted on the sprag clutch :yes
off to pick it up now and take it for a run :thumbup
