Bike trying to start when battery connected without pushing starter!

Hi all, it's been some time since my last post and really hope someone out there can help.

Went to start my 1999 Mille and met by familiar struggle to start and then clicking - battery was duff. Tried jump starting from lawnmower battery and then car, still no joy. Bought new Optimate 4 to replace rubbish Oxford charger and left on charge whilst I read up on 'brown connector' mod thinking that may help. With new life in the battery she turned over and very nearly started. Then battery was down again so I disconnected it (to exam brown connector) and left it on charge again. When I went to reconnect the battery (ignition was turned off) it just starting trying to start on it's own! Kill switch makes no difference whether it's on or off. On examining the starter button there does seem to have been some overheating and melted wires with metal showing but once cleaned up and insulated with tape same thing happens. Fuel pump doesn't make any noise so it doesn't actual start, just turns over until I disconnect the battery.

Has anyone had this happen and does anyone know what might be causing it?? Would appreciate any input.

You could have a mess on your hands m8.............if the right hand switch has gone into meltdown and the kill button has fused on.... then fuel pump will not prime..............tbh I would get either ur right hand switch first repaired by an auto spark or find a new via this forum or fleabay as it sounds like you have toasted righ hand switch or wires connecting it! and that is causing a lot of ur leccy woes..........next would be to purchase a brand new uprated battery so u know thats good to go and a 150 amp solenoid............the brown plug mod will not aid starting it just helps get juice from the stator to rectifier, then to the battery!!

To be honest mate if you have dodgy wires in ur starter circuit get it replaced as repairing will only cost more in the end!!

i got my bike to do this when i disconnected the stand switch.

have you messed with that ? or the box that controls the cut out may be damaged ? as you have 3 systems ie clutch switch stand switch and fuel cut out tip sensor .

if you have the stand switch in place check the wiring at the stand as they split so you could have a short there maybe or the wires are pulled out etc?

Check the starter solenoid, it may be stuck on :confused Disconnect it from bike & test, it should click when you apply power to the plug lead also check across the terminals it makes & breaks connection when it clicks.
It may have fused together when you were trying to start it before.

first port of call is the starter solenoid, i am 90% sure you have fused it as Nick stated above, bad battery will cause this

If the wires in your right hand switchgear are all melted it would suggest something is up .... I would at least address this problem after checking the solenoid aswell.........

your starting relay (solenoid under the seat) is sticked. this happens when you start with low power battery. happened to me 3 times when i had a poor battery. i replaced the starting relay anyway and got a new battery also. solved

Great advice guys, thanks very much! I'll test the solenoid and probably the starter switch. Does anyone know where I can get a 150amp solenoid from??

Yamaha part number for 150amp solenoid is 3UF-81940-00-00 or 4KD-81940-00. They are about £25 at Wemoto.

Sorted! Got new starter solenoid from Wemoto for £28.69 delivered (part number: MA-7063001, ordered the 4KD-81940000 but was sent a German version which is apparently better, still 150Amp), fitted and she no longer tries to start on her own. Just starter switch to be cleaned up and repaired. Haven't finished putting it all back together yet, may get the brown connector mod done whilst the fairings off, but at least the main problem is fixed. New upgraded battery on the list but hoping to leave that til the winter.

Many thanks to all who helped! :)

All fixed, starting fine and holding good charge (13.9 at the battery and 13.8 at the dash) so no need for brown connector mod. And great day for testing, thanks all again.

If you do the mod you should get 14.1-14.3v as the plug causes quite a bit of resistance and its only a matter of time before it stops being effective charging your battery!!
Agree its been a gr8 day for a blast I went ridin for 4 hours bikes everywhere & rozzers :(
