Cant get my 2002 mille r to fire up,engine turns over but wont engage ,have tried everything I know, which isnt much,I now need to find a descent /cheap mechanic in the Glasgow area, can anyone help !
This is my first bike and im desperate to have some fun but im getting a bit p....d off with it at the moment.

Have you checked the tip over switch under the seat? Or the sidestand switch?? There are a few small things that are easily checked before stumping up for a garage!! How are you trying it?? It should be started with the fast idle fuly on and NO THROTTLE AT ALL.........just press the starter. Where are you???

Thanks for the advice.I disconnected the sidestand switch by disconnecting it at the stand but I believe you have to take it from under the tank and join up the wires if you remove the switch?.I had a look at the fall switch I took it off and it rattles is this the norm ? Your advice on starting the bike is what I do already but it wont engage.
Im on South side of Glasgow if you have any contacts in the trade cause im getting nowhere fast and I will probably end up doing more damage to the bike.

Davie the tip over switch does rattle mate, thats fine.

Is the battery 100%?

There is another option for starting it but it's on a last option basis. Put it on charge tonight, to ensure the battery is fully up to speed, tomorrow try as normal again, fast idle fully on and thumb the starter. If it doesn't fire after 5 secs, stop.

This time, fully close the fast idle and turn the ignition on, thumb the starter and this time twist the throttle FULLY open!!! be ready to knock it right back the minute it fires. There will probably be a fair bit of reek coming out for the first few secs, always did with mine!!

Let me know how you get on mate, I'm through in west lothian so if still no joy by next weekend i'll pop through on Sunday and we'll get it sorted.

Tried a set of fresh plugs?. My Mille had been sat since September last year and hadn't been started or turned a wheel until a week ago when it would turn over and over on a good charged battery but never fire up.

I posted over on AF1 about it and Micah said to try fresh plugs. I drained the fuel out of it as well in case it had gone "off" over the stood still period. Had a fresh set of NGK's here so swapped them out and after 3 thumbs of the starter button it finally coughed into life. It's been running as sweet as a nut ever since.

When you say it won't engage, do you mean that the starter is spinning but the engine isn't?

Chances are if the engine is spinning over and it has failed to start up on the first or second hit of the button the spark plugs will be soaked in fuel. Does it smell like 3 gallon of unleaded just dropped out of the exhaust?

Remove the plugs and check they are clean and dry, while they are out check for a spark too.

I take it you have no alarm/immobiliser on the bike?

Cheers ,this is a great site, I cant believe the support out there particularly for a new biker like myself.I will try what you say and get back to you tomorrow.Your help is much appreciated.
