had this crazy idea in my head to build a bike, havent got loads of money but i am a paint sprayer/body repairer, and also have a few mechanices around me, so im sure for example I could buy a frame, get it shot blasted and paint it up lush, the same goes with all the body pannels...but apart from this fun idea in my head how hard would it be really?, I have my mille so there would be no pressure in time so could make it perfect,

Also if you guys/gals were to build a bike which one would you build? or would you make some wierd 'rat'? my idea is a sp2 nc51 :devious opinions pls ...

I've built up a fair few bikes in my time (basically bolting a bunch of spares back into the bike it once was - so not building per se), my advice is ............... if it's to have some fun and have something to show at the end and you have the disposable cash then go for it! BUT!!!! if it's because you think it will be cheaper to build a bike than buy one whole then thats not the case (I can honestly say that building them back up has cost me in most cases as much or slightly more - granted I've had the oportunity to regrease and check everything before reassembly).

When I do eventually build a custom or 2 they will be: a flat tracker (like red above I think they look awesome) and a bobber (again I love bobbers - they portray the ultimate cruising bike, which is a slight contradiction in term as they have no real suspension in thier classic guise :) )

My two pence worth for ya ;)

Deacs :thumbup

Build whatever floats your boat :biggrin
Not a cheap hobby though, just finished this at Xmas & featured in Practical Sportsbike mag. Did most of the work myself & it still cost 6K  Built from parts off 15 different bikes

Flat tracker

How much would you charge for a full mille bodykit to be sprayed?

well depends of the condition of the kit to start with, and the paints to be used, if it was the mille matt black it would be cheaper than some funky colour...but we could come to some sort of deal :D im after modded headers at some point

looks wicked doesnt it? love a go on that, love my vtwin, but a 500 2 stroke....that would be fun :D

yea I've always had a hankering to building a flat tracker, as Deacs says, it'll never be a money saving exercise, at the mo I'm in the midst of cafe racing my old bmw r80
Whereabouts in Cornwall are you?. I get to Falmouth quite a lot

That's lovely.....only thing is, when this anti tempering EU ***** starts that's things like this fkd....pen pushing :jack

no pics yet as there isn't a lot to see, I've got a tank and seat from a royal enfield clubman and am gonna have to cut em about a bit (could do with a tig welder realy)
Bees I might give you a shout when I'm next down as if I'm staying for four days or so I can get a little bored without any bike talk!

we should have a little bit on the forum for non-aprilia things...other interests ,projects etc

got a little yam 250 i bought for £50 stood for 10 years got it running just! ...fancy a little flat-tracker for local/short runs..but have already found a 400 engine for it.and some rs125 usd forks with a mille disc with the xs cast wheel bolts straight up..oh no! a cheap runabout has turned into a bit of a project...no real pics as its just a pile of parts waiting to be bolted together ..and left ratty looking..but will update when i get a chance

I tried to put a z1300 engine in an suzuki RM500 frame in the early 90's, it never happened in the end as a mate used the engine for something else but it seemed like a good idea at the time.
The TL forum had a "top tip" section which was great and I'm sure it had a project section but can't remember. The best top tip I had off it was to stick a magnet on yer battery drill/driver to carry all the bits, screws, drills etc
