just thought i would share my MOT failure with you think the guy was being a bit (anal)

1. no reflecter on rear numberplate

2. less than 1.5mm on front pads (not sure how he checked that!!!)

3. no pillion foot peg (bike has single side arrow exhaust system and rear
pod so dont quite know who was going to sit on there)

oh well no re-test fee and back in on monday i will be legal (maybe)

cheers the Shoddmiester:biggrin

p.s will post some pics this weekend

hello matey welcome to the zone,

in answer to your questions mate, it is illegal not to have a reflector at the rear (plod will give you a producer for this if they are grumpy enough, and could even impound the bike if they are having a reeeeeeally bad day), brake pads are a huge deal with the MOT stations as thats your only means of safety in an emergecy (remember the MOT tester also has an obligation to make sure you're safe as well as you meet the minimum requirements as set out in law), pillion peg thing is probably a bit anal but if they start looking and see the other issue's above then they will just add it all.

Basically rule of thumb is if you have something on your bike then it HAS to be complete and work correctly, eg: if you have the left had switchgear with the indicator stalk - then you have to have the indicators and they have to flash at the correct rate BUT if there's no indicator stalk then you don't need indicators.

Deacs

NO I'M NOT A KNOW IT ALL, IT'S JUST THAT I'VE HAD TO GET THE ANSWERS MYSELF IN THE PAST :D

Get yourself down to halfrauds, they sel reflectors for kids bikes. Just stick em to your number plate.

Remove the peg from the hanger then it's not a problem. As it is then a single seat bike

I'm afriad its new pads for the front. 1.5mm is **** all anyway.

I had a zx9 and my rear seat was fitted and I had no re pegs, it failed. I was told that if I had the pod on the back then its fine. I question the seat pod thing with him.

as for reflector, my place just fits a reflector if its not got one. more work than its worth for that sake of 70p

How did he check the pads! im impressed, well After the re-test I wouldnt take my bike back to him, He sounds a tossser :)

I found out about the reflector bit as I had to have a new legal plate made. The dealers had a choice of stickon round or oblong reflectors @ £1 a time if I remember correctly.

As a by the way,the reflector should by law be placed centrally so we just stuck a small oblong one to the bottom of the plate on the plate maker name.

Does seem a bit anal I agree but the penaltys coming to the dealers if caught transgressing the ministry guide lines are draconian. ( only in Britain:jack ain't we lucky)

My local shop ( not Aprilia ) will not take a bike in for MOT without asking ' have you put the standard can back on? )

Also they happened to have a ministry inspector in one day and he bollocked them and threatened to revoke their MOT testing licence because they didn't have a designated person doing plates and they didn't insist on seeing all parts ofthe new picture driving license.

I know this as I still use a paper license and due to Ministry guidelines these are inadmissable and I was told that they should by law refuse to issue a plate to me ,fortunately the guy is a mate who thinks the law is an *** so I got the MOT.

BIG BROTHER is definitely watching us

I can still remember the days when we were a democracy, now the old east German Stasi would be surprised at what we put up with.

I took the rear foot pegs off my ZX6R and it passed the MOT - even with the pillion seat still on. Guess its just down to whether the tester is have a good/bad day !!!!!

Pegs on a biek with seat pod is fine (mine passed), pillion seat with no pegs is a failure, my old bike failed on this.

i thought if im going too have a reflector... it might aswell be an Italian one !! :biggrin

As an ex inspectorate vehicle tester, he's got a right to ask for a rear reflector, although most tuned in biker testers would probably let it go if they know you aren't a DOT spy! The brake pads are definitely a safety issue and would fail if he estimates them to be under 1.5mm, just get them sorted. As for the single seat, you don't need pegs with a single seat unit or cover (just make sure you don't have one!) I'd suggest finding a garage or bike shop with test facilities that are friendly, and build up a relationship, get yr chain lube from them, go there for the occasional nut or bolt etc. You'll probably find them more lenient at MOT time :)

bloody hell, just brought one from ebay now. been watching the reflector for a couple of days after seeing it on amb's bike but didnt know what it would look like with a small plate and on a yellow bike, Cheers buddy, now I know and now I brought it.

How have you guys stuck it on?

as I've got a small (ish) plate, I just stuck it to the pointy bit at the bottom of the number plate holder :thumbup

Lol ! ! if it's Italian it will probably stop being reflective very soon and need replacing with a Japanese part, at least it's not electrical though.

Oh dear, thats two of us treading on very thin ice then :pirate

Aah, well it could have been worse...I've had one of those Italian flag refelectors on my bike for a year now & it's just stuck on the bottom of the plate & nope it's never fallen off!

I've got one stuck on the sticky out bit under where the battery sits, you can only see it really well when I brake!!
