I’m pretty sure i have an issue with my battery and just wanted to run it past you guys.

My bike has been parked up for 3 weeks with the battery hooked up to the optimate while i was getting married and off on my honeymoon and i tried to start her this weekend with no joy.

The fuel pump primed when turned on and the dash lit up but when i tried to start her all i heard was a ticking noise and after a couple of attempts the clocks switched from miles to kilometres.

Am i right in thinking its the battery even though it was hooked up to the optimate while i was away?

Test the battery first with a multimeter. See if it will start with some jump leads off a car battery :thumbup

Sure one of the others guys will give you the techinical description :) but I had a similar problem after I bought my bike and took it back to the shop. It was a wire under the seat that can come loose and once they connected it all worked well. Hope your problem is the same :thumbup

I just left mine for 5 days uncharged as I didn't think it would be a problem. It's a fantactic day today and the battery is completely dead no lights no alarm no nothing so I'm assuming this time to battery is dead as it needs charging sooner then I thought would this be the case? :dunno

Sorry for jumping on your thread Barryrs :pirate

What was the optimate reading on the LEDs? Was it in Maintenance moad when you come back home and reading good?

Is it possible that the fuse could have blown in the battery connector to the optimate?

I had an Optimate that the output wire had snapped at the solder joint on the circuit board but it still said it was charging the battery when you turned it on even though it wasn't connected!

Could be battery...when you plugged your optimate in, was the power already on :dunno I think you have to connect it with power off first otherwise it doesnt charge. Try switching power off then back on and leave it to charge a few hoursto try that before spending on a new battery :thumbup

Congrats on the wedding btw :thumbup

If you hear a clicking noise then the chances are its your starter relay, but first i would test the battery with a multi meter.if thats ok it could be the relay

Cheers guys, i will try and find a mate with a multimeter and test the batterys output.

I always make sure the optimate is switched off before i connect it and once connected it was showing a charge input of just 2 amps so im guessing its working correctly?

Thanks for the heads up Tiswas, i will have a look later.

Cheers Sprocker, it was a great day and honeymoon

All down hill now mate, been married 10 months and already the chain is tightening, reckon your problem sounds like the batt is foo barred, if it is dont forget to change the starter solenoid for a yam one for better starting performance. Congrats on wedding mate.

Barry, let me know if you want to try my battery in your bike. First off tho I would check the battery connections. That was the problem on my bike. One of them had vibrated loose and was just touching on the terminal. The symptoms were the same as you described mate.:eatcorn

Hmm that has happened before but the terminal came off completly so she was dead; perhaps i should get some loctite on them if one has come loose again ?

Don't keep trying to start it with a bad battery or you will feck the solenoid for good, i would spend £20 and fit a Yamaha one anyway for piece of mind

Checked the battery and its putting out a healthy 13.3 volts and dropping to 8.5 volts when turning it over.

Once I had removed the seat it was immediately obvious that the ticking noise was coming from what I guess is the solenoid (cylindrical part directly behind the battery). I measured the voltage at the various points and it had 13 volts going in from the battery but just 0.5 volts coming out when turning the bike over.

Am I right in thinking this is probably the problem? My brother who is a mechanic is going to pop round tonight and check for me as he said it could be just a bad earth.

I don't know all of the components and thier locations but I would have thought that the solenoid for the starter would be located right next to the starter motor. Or am I getting confused and its the starter relay we are talking baout which I guess is a type of solenoid?

Relay/solonoid...confusing aint it,i know the starter RELAY makes a clicking noise when fecked and its positioned just behind the battery, dont know where the SOLONOID is though :dunno :biggrin

When low-current power from the starting battery is applied to the starter solenoid, usually through the starter relay which will be used so that the start switch doesn't carry the full load of the solenoid. The solenoid pushes out the drive pinion on the starter driveshaft and meshes the pinion with the ring gear on the flywheel of the engine.
I think.... lol

Looking at this diagram i believe the faulty part may be no. 12

Starter relay 12V/150A

So you aint up for a spin up through Cheddar Gorge in the morning Barry I spose:dowhat Get yer part and we will sort summat out buddy.:eatcorn

Hmmm seems the starter solenoid wasnt too fault as its still not turning over.

My brother took the starter motor out last night and tested it but it seems its sticking (but the leads we used were a bit crap) so my question is if the motor was the fault would trying to turn it over with it sticking cuase the solenoid to go nuts?

My brother thinks its prob just the battery but it would be nice to know either way.

Regarding the battery; when i tested it the other day it was putting out 13volts but after a couple of days off charge it dropped to 10. Do you think its shot ???
