Battery losing charge

Hi all

I have been out a couple of times and when I come back and plug the battery optimizer in, the reading says the battery is showing only half charged. It then charges it up to maximum again.

What could be causing this please?

1st thing to check is charging voltage.
Start bike up, put a meter across battery terminals.
You're looking for 14v plus at about 2 to 3000 rpm

(That's assuming your charger thingy isn't telling porkies.)

think your battery is on its way out, its no longer holding its charge, you can keep topping it up but its not ideal. plus you can replace it with 14 amp battery, ready for winter.

Hi chaps,

I did the test, the battery read 12v with the engine off and when revved to 3000/4000rpm it went to 12.3v !!

I only bought the Motobatt last year the 14amp version. Its had three batteries in 18 months. Never had a problem with any of my bikes batteries in the last 25 years.

Any thoughts please?

12.3v does seem a little low.
Check your connections. esp. earths and brown connectors.

What does it drop to when you crank the bike over?
Shouldn't be much below 10.5v

I read a thing on here (I think) saying if you disconnect your battery you need to follow a procedure to stop the clock/dash using up too much amps. When you reconnect battery, turn switch to on but do not start bike, leave it on for 15 seconds then turn key off and that resets to clock/dash so it doesn't use up battery. I do this everytime on mine and it works just fine now.

sounds similar to my bike, it turned out the stator was faulty.
I was getting 12.6v at the battery while it was idling. ive replaced the stator and its showing 13.8v now.
If your stator is faulty either get it re wound or its a replacement althout a new one is expensive from aprilia. I found that a stator form the tuono 2006/2007 would fit my 2004 gen2 rsvr, I got a new one for £81 from ebay . . . it works a treat

When you say £81 Is that from an the USA? Are you in the UK or US? Ive seen ones for £90 ish but they will have import tax on also I think.

Try West Country Windings fella.
About £100 for a rewind, using thicker wire, and fewer turns on the stator.
Not a perfect fix ( you'll need the 370w rotor for that) but pretty close
You can also specify length of tails which makes routing the wires on re assembly much easier.

Also WemMoto do a decent pattern part for a fraction of the Aprilia OE part.

that's from the UK. the place is called motorsport electrics. 08432 898190.

It was £81 delivered. if they haven't got the mille ones in ask for one to fit the 2006/2007 tuono they fit the gen 2 milles aswell

Fitted a new stator today and a Ricks rectifier plus a Shiver rear brake system, maybe all my troubles will be fixed.
