Hi mate.

I was instructed to strap mine down through the headstock and on the footrest hangers using standard ratchet straps when I hired a trailer, they reckoned too much stress if you tie on the handlebars.
Hope that helps.

They do look it but are pretty bloody strong, easy strong enough to hold your bike up, you only need these tight enough to stop the bike going sideways as you use the headstock straps to stiop it moving backwards. Put the bike in gear then get a mate to help push the bike forward moving the back wheel so the bike is up against the gears and resists rolling back ( you need to lift the back of the bike a bit to get it fully locked but is easy).
Also get someone to sit on the bike when you do the rear straps to stop it bouncing.

Dont put the actual hooks on the headstock or the hangers, put the straps through and join the hooks in the middle to stop the hooks rubbing on your metal areas. I put bits of clean rag on the areas where the straps touched the bike to prevent any marks.

Definetley mind using the bars, i had the rac recover the zxr from a bike rally years ago cos the reg/rect burnt the wiring out. he ratcheted it down on the bars and off home we went.

Got home, did the repairs and riding into work the front end felt funny, so pulled over to the side and pulled/pushed on the bars, and the left bar securing bolt had sheared through. I was so lucky i had pulled over. I complained to the RAC about it, and how dnagerous it was, but they were not intrested.

I ended up having to have the broken stud welded out of the bar, and replaced the other side with high tensile bolts as well.

I have always used the headstock and rear pillion foot rest hangers with ratchet straps whenever moving bikes about, and have never lost one yet.

i use a similar setup to that picture post simon

also use a rachet strap over the seat

been using this set up for a couple of years now

Thanks for all the advice guys, I'll have a play this week and see how it looks. Those tyredowns look good - how much are they are where can you get them in the UK?

I've ordered the wonderbar - it was cheap so if it looks like it is going to strain the bars I won't use it. I'll post my opinion of it for future reference.

This is the first time I'll have put the bike on a trailer - when I use a van I just put it on the Abba stand and strap that, which seems to work pretty well.
