oops, i think my sprag may have gone:dunno, i went for a ride the other day and after i had stopped for lunch i started the bike, but too much fast idle, quickly knocked off the fast idle and the bike stalled and i heard a clunk as the sprag kicked back. the bike started again ok, but on the way home the engine sounded a bit noisy, i hav'nt used the bike since(as i am working 12hr shifts), the engine noise on tickover was akin to a plastic kneeslider sliding down the road, mixed with a metallic whirring sound. does that make any sense to anyone with knowledge of a failed sprag clutch, i won't get a chance to whip of the cover and inspect it till monday, but any suggestions or points to look out for would be appreciated, i have had a search for sprag clutch but i can't find any reference to any undue noise,

gordy,

AS far as I know, the sprag only makes a grinding noise when you're trying to start it as it should be disengaged once the engine is running - unless something's jammed in it I suppose but not heard of this before.

yes mate now that you mention it, i wonder if something broke off when it kicked back and is jammed somewhere , i think between now and monday i'll be thinking the worst. cheers for the quick response,

REgards gordy.

Hi Gordy, sorry to here about the bike, give Griff a ring,I think he's back from his Hols,he might be able to help with some advise & parts

I think KiwiRSVR reported his was grinding and it turned out to be a loose flywheel.

That nearly destroyed the nose of his crank so beware and try not to run it any further until you strip it down to investigate. :eatcorn

Let us know what you find.

Yup sure did :rant, 4 things to think about.

1. The flywheel has to sit perfectly on the keyway
2. The flywheel retaining bolt has to totally clean and you need to smother the threads in the correct loctite used.
3. Torque the bolt to the correct settings, dont guess
4. Make sure you put the alternator wires back correctly

Items 1,2 & 3 not done properly will result in the flywheel coming loose and windmilling giving you this kind of grinding noise, worse it will ruin your crankshaft.

Item 4 not done properly means the wires will get destroyed , the battery wont charge the bike will die !!, You will then need to pull it all apart again.

Happened March this year after replacing the sprag clutch.

sprag failed (low battery and continued attempts to start)
replaced sprag
on ride out bike started vibrating , strange grinding noise and losing power eventually bike died and starter motor just spun.
pulled side casing off and the head of the flywheel retaining bolt fell out followed by the flywheel.
it appears that at some point in the past the bolt had been airgunned onto the crank weakening it , although I refitted it, it was now fataly weakened and failed allowing the flywheel to "float" thus eventually breaking free and doing significant damage.

Ok, i ended up with a day off today so spent some time working on the bike,
I put the battery on charge and took off the side cover, everything seems to be fine, :doug, put the cover and battery back on, started it up, all ok,
a mate had a listen and said it sounded fine to him,:dunno, he also added that it was me just being over critical and hearing things. so thanks for all your help chaps. have a beer on me,

BTW. does anyone know the correct battery voltage at.

1- ignition off

2- at tickover

3- at 3000plus rpm.

cheers, gordy.

That's the trouble with Forums like this, you can end up imaging all sorts of mayhem about to happen.

Mine is a fear of the timing chain tensioners letting go. Dunno why, but I think I may change them for a set of manual ones as soon as I can get back in a workshop.

Ignorance IS bliss

When the bike stalls it will make a graunching noise.

The sprag wont make a noise whilst riding the bike.

Start the bike up again and pull in the clutch no doubt it is the normal RSV clutch basket chatter.

FYI start the bike using 1/2 choke and as soon as it fires back it off to let warm up.
