Another question! Fitting crash bungs

J

JaRSV

I know, I know - here I am again asking yet another question!:roll

My bike has R&G crash bungs fitted already on the frame and I have some other ones to go within the front fairing air vents. Only problem is I'm not too sure or confident on how to cut the holes in the vents so that....

a. they are in the right place

and

b. they look good, neat & tidy

Again, any help advice is appreciated.:thumbup

I did mine by winding one of the bolts in to the bracket as far as I could then putting some tipex or similar on the end then offering the panel up as close as possible to the right place. This leaves a mark on the inside as a drilling guide. It's a lot easier if you peel back and tape out the way the sound deadening material on the inside of the panel.
Once I'd measured it about 10 times:eek:, I drilled a small pilot hole and then used a hole saw a bit bigger than the crash bung to rip through the panel - it's a bit scary to do but is not too bad and you can clean up the edges with a dremel or suchlike.
One of the hole edges is very close to the edge of the panel but it seems OK.
Note that the holes are in different places on left and right panels.
Alternatively, you can just drill a smaller hole to let the bung shafts go through rather than the bungs themselves - this is neater but means that you have unbolt the bungs every time you want to take the panel off. As I have mine off quite often to top up the oil it seemed too much of a pain in the arse for me.
Don't worry too much if you **** it up as it's a great excuse to buy some tasty carbon infill panels to replace the ones you've just trashed!:thumbup

I don't suppose that the tasty carbon infill panels come pre-holed for the crash bungs? I've just ordered some, bungs that is, and equally don't want to make a mess of it!!

Id defiintly follow A303s advise. I did that with an R1 i had and it worked like a dream!
The template that R&G suppiled for my 05 RSV are slightly out by about 5mm

Im havin the same problem as you though! Ive had a set in the garage for 2 years and cant bring myself to stick the drill into the fairing!!

Use a pilot hole and then a cone cutter from machine mart that way you can keep checking the diameter till its a snug fit.

And when youve had some practice pop round and do mine!!!
