Another Mille with a Gremlin of the Electrical Kind...

Afternoon all,

I had been looking forward to riding to Snetterton at the weekend to watch the BSB - I had to leave after half a day due to sunburn from the previous day and absolutely no available shade but I digress - but a couple of small electrical issues nearly scuppered my plans.

I got a new battery Saturday and stuck it on the Oximate overnight; hooked it up on Sunday morning and she fired into life, first button! :thumbup

My brother arrived shortly after, we had a quick bacon butty, I got my leathers on and we headed out to set off...bloody thing wouldn't start! :confused

After a couple attempts and some messing around - alarm on, alarm off, ignition on, clutch in...nothing...alarm on, alarm off...etc etc - she eventually fired up and we headed to the petrol station.
I filled her up and...same as above! :angry
The same messing about ensued and she eventually fired up again and we headed off to the track.
My brother said that he noticed a 'click' when we pressed the starter but I don't think it was present every time.

All was fine on the way there and due to him travelling by car, me wanting to leave my leathers in it and neither of us having tickets, the bike had to be started numerous times throughout the day and she started first button every time after that!
However, on the way home when accelerating from a roundabout or overtaking I got a feeling like hitting a rev limiter and the power being cut but I was only at approx 6k revs.
It happened a couple of times and only seemed to be when I was accelerating briskly and other than that she ran sweet as a nut!

So...what do you RSVZoners think it could be?
From what I've read on here, it sounds like either one or the other or both, the starter solenoid (can these problems be intermittent?) and/or the side-stand switch!?
When I took it for an MOT the tester noted that the ignition switch was faulty but I'm now not entirely convinced that it wasn't one of the above instead...or could it be the ignition switch and neither of the above?

Any help and advise would be much appreciated.
I realise that the starter solenoid and stand switch bypass are both relatively cheap and easy to resolve and probably should / will need to be done at some point in the bike's life but for peace of mind I'd like to diagnose the problem properly rather than do a few things at once and hope that one of them sorts it.

Cheers

Rob

Check both fuses under the seat, when I say chech them I don't mean to see if they are blown, pull them both out and clean the holders, even with the keys in ignition give them a wiggle and if you hear the fuel pump starting and the relay clicking you've found the fault. This happened to me also :)

What was the outcome? I'm having problems which I'm beginning to think are either igniton switch or immobiliser. Had problem with no immobiliser or alarm light, which seemed to fix itself (drying out?) and now intermittent fault where the instruments sometimes don't light up when turn ignition key.

EDIT ADDED just seen the date on this post.... replying anyway for others..

also check the wires going into the base of fuse holder under the seat, they are only spade sockets on mine.. check or bypass the tilt switch, if it fails again, try tapping each relay whilst trying the start button (could be a relay too) if you have a side stand switch, does the dash light work ok, when the stand switch is in down position, this normally lights the dash stand icon.. does this dash light appear when the fault occurs, if not you may be able rule that out?
