Refusing to start;

Battery charged. When I press the starter I get the whirring from under the tank (fuel priming I assume) and the relay (middle of 3 black boxes rear of the ECU) clicks strongly. The starter solenoid (cylinder rear of battery) does nothing. No sound from the starter.

I've explained what I think the bits might be as I'm clearly a *******/no expert! :dowhat

To me this seems like the solenoid is the most likely culprit, any advice very welcome! I don't have any electrical testing gear either.... Doe this sound correct to the more informed members of our Italian family????

Cheers.

sounds like the starter solenoid mate ( had the same problem on my previous bike a tuono) try replacing it with a Yamaha one big improvement on the Aprilia one! I had no further starting issues after fitting one! Go on the common mods forum on this site and you will find the right Yamaha part number cost is £38 ish! (get the part number though as the common misconception is that it is a R1 solenoid and its not, it fits virtualy every yamaha from a YBR 125 to a XJ1300 EXCEPT for a R1! so if you ask for a R1 starter solenoid you will get the wrong one!)

Cheers mate, thought that was the case. Off to see Yamaha tomorrow then!

Would I be right in thinking I can bridge the connectors on the solenoid (as it is a switch seperating the battery from other, more delicate, electronic bits) to test if the starter motor turns over. Or will this risk frying the bike?

Yes cheers Jase, I had a look at the wiring to see where they went etc after I read your comment, was just looking for reassurance that it wouldn't fook anything. Went for it and starter turns over, so looks like it's the solenoid. Thanks for the help fellas!

yes ive had same issue mate but i got an aprilia 150 amp starter solenoid from ebay for just under £30 if i remember correctly...and what a difference its made. best try that first id say

The engine cutoff switch in in the "run" position, isn't it?

Yes mate, although if it wasn't I would never admit it! :uhoh

It was stood from last May, except for a few quick rides as I was on a govenment paid excursion to Southern Asia 'til Nov. New battery and Yamaha solenoid on order.

Went for a quick spin. Before I put her to bed I decided to fire it up again.................nothing! Like the button isn't connected to anything! Hasn't been washed, kill switch in run position, in neutral. F~~~ing Italian *****!

I had a listen, when the key is turned I can here the relevent click and the fuel priming. Sounded like it was gargling slightly (maybe it always does this but I havn't noticed it?) - but no life in the starter motor at all! About a month ago it had a new battery and the Yamaha starter solenoid, I couldn't bring myself to remove the seat to test that.

That's it - anyone know of a decent SP-2 for sale anywhere?

Have you checked the big brown connector for the rectifier....sounds like she's not charging properly...the connector on my olf tuono went on one of the 3 spades and wouldn't hold charges unless it stayed above 5000 revs all the time....i cut the connector out and just inlined the wires...30 minutes work and it ran a treat once recharged.

so has it run since you laid it up?
have you tried shorting the two large connectors on the solenoid, with the ignition on?
if it had a new solenoid it could be something as simple as a loose connection maybe it wasn't fitted correctly

Thanks for the replies, excuse my rage :)

If I bridge the solenoid it does indeed fire up. Dodgy Yamaha solenoid? Possibility.

I did have the offer of borrowing a solenoid to test yesterday off the old man's bike - for some reason I refused. Proper hissy fit on this one :supergay

New solenoid ordered off Ebay. Hopefully that's it.
