airbox mod

I have stayed out of this so far as i feel it is up to an individual to make their own choices which route to take for modding their airbox, i am of the same opinion as majorjam, my reasons being

1 If you take away the airbox you have lost the ram air effect as it is lost due to having no actual airbox to give you pressure, the pressure in the airbox means the air can be drawn quicker into the motor as it is pressurised.

2 If you have cooler denser air this will also give better performance, the enclosed airbox mod means you are not allowing the motor to draw hot air from around the motor, this warm air will not be as dense as it has dried out due to heat, hot dry air is power sapping, go out on your bike on a chilly day and you will notice it runs crisper and picks up quicker, this is the cool air with moisture content.

3 The faster your speed the more air you are forcing into the sealed airbox which in turn is giving you forced induction, meaning more air and more fuel going into the motor quicker, thus giving more power.

4 This one is my own preference, the sealed mod is not as noisy, i prefer to hear the note of the exhaust than have it drowned out by the airbox.

Personally i do not see any cons with the Rene type method at all apart from the noise of the induction roar if that is what the rider wants, the first three are the reasons i believe make the sealed unit a better prospect.

This is not a post to upset any of you guys that have made an airbox mod recently, but i thought it was better to point out some valid reasons for going the sealed route.

Now, i just hope that Sabre's face has not turned the colour of his bike:nana:thumbup

Open for discussion now:devious

A few points well put forward.

However, the seal to tank/airbox mod has a major flaw in that it could if the seal failed allow debris or unfiltered air in to the combustion chambers.

I would carry out this mod but only if I could somehow fit the filter directly over the velocity stacks so that no dirty air could enter the engine.

Don't suppose you have had any thoughts on his one??

Sprocker, Sabres is a Rene type mod.

amb67, good point but not that valid unless you make a pigs ear of forming the seal, the Evo mod uses only a rubber seal to form the seal against the tank, not good IMO as it is not tight enough, the foam seal is compressed so that it takes up all the samll imperfections on the underside of the tank, i did 18k miles with mine and it is still going strong as a track only bike in Ireland with the very same foam i fitted to it in 2001, i understand where you are coming from, but it is not an issue unless the fitter is incompetent.

On the other hand, what if the foam on your filter over the inlets tore or you had a big backfire through the inlets and melted the foam, that would be worse now.

The absolute best airbox mod on the market is made by a german company, and guess what, it is sealed

I am interested in any discussion around this as it brings up valid points that we can all make up our own minds about which way to go, i will take a bit of convincing though:pirate

Dolenc, that is the Evo kit and in my mind the rubber seal is not good enough to give a good seal on the underside of the tank, it is also expensive for what it is, the mod i did does the same job as the Evo kit but does it better as the seal is so much better, also it will only cost you about £5 for some materials plus some patience and a stanley knife, a no brainer to me:thumbup

PS you don't need to buy a new filter, the original is fine as long as it is clean and in good condition.

for noise alone i love the mod, personally i think my bike rides better with it, it also rides better with my rene copy twin exhausts on, no jerky slow speed problems.
Some valid points going round though and am interested, maybe i need to spend my £5 and seal the tank????????

Hi Badger. Mate.:thumbup

I ran an Evo for a year and then decided I liked the look of the Rene so decided to make a copy. Piccys posted on here. I gave the EVO to my mate Ron when he bought his 99 Tricolour.

The noise from the Rene started doing my head in - I do a lot of miles - so , Rather than ask Ron for my EVO back I decoided to look for an altrernative. Read all the posts on the various forums but mainly yours on RSVR.net.

I bought a Halfords Camping Mat and was all set to copy yours but then I thought I could copy the EVO by " modifying" the original lid to make a securing ring. I fashioned a sealing flange from the Mat fitted it, greased it up and hey ho it works like a dream.

~So, to sumarise. Ive tried both types. The power delivery changes with each type but is much better than the original. They both sound fantastic but
I prefer the delivery and (less) noise of the EVO (copy).

Phew.

I have thought of a way to secure the filter on the Evo copy by thoughtful modification of the lid when cutting to make the ring. Ill lget round to it one day and post piccys.

Best thing of all? I made em myself and they work!!!!:pirate

I agree with Badger. So.When I made my EVO copy I made the flange wider to get a better seal.

Haha Sabre, and here was me thinking you still had the rene copy on the bike but you now have changed to an evo type mod, get some pics taken man and lets see what you have done, scrape the mud of first though:thumbup

Both types of mod are a vast improvement over the standard airbox, so if you have not done this yet, get your finger out:pirate

I have put a little thought into this and the german version realy is the nicest.

So Ill try to make something like this during the winter, if everything goes wrong I can still buy the original for 200eur :D

These are photos of the latest incarnation of the EVo Copy.

You can see Ive cut the lid of an original airbox to form a "ring". to hold the flange in place. But this time Ive cut it so that it will still retain the filter.

How have you done the front part Stuart ? Is that an extra piece of foam that you've stuck to the front edge of the other foam, and how is it supported it's hard to tell from the photo's :dunno

I like the idea of using the old lid to hold the filter in place :thumbup

I must have been away to miss this post :roll

If you ever get chance to look at an original EVO you will see that at the front the flange folds back upon itself to help make the seal. I have cut the same shape from the foam. I folded it back on itself and glued it in place. Seems to work.

Has anyone any pics on how this all works, please?

I've seen this thread http://apriliaperformance.myfastforum.org/archive/my-new-airbox-mod__o_t__t_2261.html (cheers RedRat) but the only issue I have is how tall to cut the lid at the front edge... Mind, and I have no means of fabricating the bracket.... Ideas, please, folks?

I'm happy trying the foam route using a camping mat type thing. Anyone have any other ideas? And I'm looking at this method purely from a budgetary standpoint - I not got much monies!!!!

Is there any reason why you couldn't. just use a hole saw and cut a circle out of the standard airbox lid directly above the filter, slightly smaller than the outer diameter of the actual filter and then use a k&n from an 01-03 bike that doesn't have a top to it.
surely this would still allow the cold air in the normal way and also allow extra air to be drawn in through the top as well as giving more of an induction roar.
does this make sense?

IMO, it wouldn't seal very well, so allowing crap in, so why not just do teh whole "ditch teh lid and seal it to teh bottom of teh tank" thing, so increase the volume of teh airbox.

i DO get what you're saying though - kind of like teh best of both worlds, but with a little compromise :)
