hi this is my first post as i have just bought my first rsv this week! been looking at the popular mods that seem to get done with the air box mod being a must it seems due to a severe lack in volume. so went out to garage and lifted tank to ***** and was wondering if volume is such an issue has no one tried to extend the base of the air box to seal to the tank to gain the area at the side? i know it wouldnt be much but every bit helps.

iben looking at that mod but ment cutting the sides of the air box base down to level with the bottom of the air filter and velocity stacks then say sticking plastic out horizontal and sealing that to the tank. this would free up the volume right round the air box, possibly

Are you going to try it that way :dunno post some pics up when/if you do it. If it doesn't work you can always pick up another box from e-bay cheap enough :thumbup

might be tricky but maybe possibly to seal a plate to the underside of the tank and have that lower down over filter and seal on modified base. will get round to having a go and post verdict. will ecu compensate for extra air or will a pc111 and dyno time be needed.

Cant comment on that as i haven't got the experience to say, but i recon you will need a pc111 and set up the fueling etc with a dyno as you say :thumbup

you wont need a power commander unless you want one but you should probably get a dealer to reset/balance your cylinders via the CO adjustment. If your new to Fuel injection its like balancing carbs but done via exhaust gas mixture rather than vaccum. Its not dear either just £40 or so.

Surely the easier option is to make the base plate as flat as possible and put one of those ITG filters that sits directly over the velocity stacks on?

This way you're increasing your airbox volume to the maximum and are far more likely to stop debris entering the intake.

I'm not too confident that the foam round the airbox idea is cool, if that was to break loose after a while it could in effect be sucked directly in to the intake.

In my design idea the filter would most certainly have to go over the velocity stacks.

i agree a filter over the stacks would be better as you would only loose air box pressure from a leeking seal and not get dirty air. A few years ago i read kevin camerons sportbike performance handbook, dont have it now but think i can remem ber something about ressonance and that the air box should be a rigid box. with that in mind was thinking about the renagade and evo kit and think the size and thickness of the new gasket may compromise this and although give some gains but could possibly be improved with a more solid box to tank junction. could be way off, will have to buy book again! also does anybody know if the rough texture on the underside of the tank is possibly a marginally bad idea? could be wrong again, its happened before once! lol! :devious

Ok, So this is a totally dumb question but what is wrong with the standard airbrox?:dunno

I removed a plastic restrictor piece from my airbox but that didn't seem to do much to performance on my bike, still have the original airbox with no mods

i have EVO kit fitted...best is to remove all the foam from back of the tank, then with fine wet and dry, make a nice smooth band where the gasket will seal...i use K&N high temp grease and get a very good seal. The induction sound is superb! :pirate

If you read the last few posts of my link you will see that I have made a copy of the EVO at a fraction of the cost. I agree Aus that the sound is fantastic - even louder with the RENE though. The power gains are noticable. It allows the engine to breath properly as it is well documented that the original air box is too small. Any one running the original 99-03 air box needs to change IMHO. :pirate

Sabre, not that I'm usually any good at making things, unless it is made of metal. Have you got any designs, measurements, pictures etc... of your Rene copy?

I may have a go at doing one for mine as it looks like it's going to be a long damp winter.

(STL if your reading this I still want your help, just looking at all options)

Cheers

Free the airbox! The Power will follow!
I was fortunate enough when i bought my rsv it came with a renegade kit fitted! It sounds like a WSB when going up through the gears with the throttle pinned! Thoroughly recommend it! The noise is addictive!!!

These are some pictures of the mod I made. Cheesy now has it ready for his rebuilt beast. I used Tufnal for the base ( a type of Bakelite) as it is a poor conductor of heat. Some folk use Ally plate but I thought that might get VERY hot. Ive got some drawings somewhere. Getting the correct base plate measurements is the hardest part. Filters are ITG.

:drool Superb job Sabre on that unit of yours, i can see the advantages of design!
Induction noise :pirate
