What'sthe difference between a stock air filter and an aftermarket one like K&N?
Tired and bored which has made me wonder what makes an aftermarket one better than a standard one.

After market air filters such as BMC or K&N allow for a better flow of air into the engine than stock filters. Also, with a lot of after market filters they are washable, meaning they don't need to be replaced as frequently. Definitely one of the mods to look at, along with airbox modifications, if you're looking at tuning your Mille.

I believe the stock filter actually gives better airflow than the k+n. But does this mean the air pulled in therefore cleaner?

As markrsv states the k+n can be removed and cleaned so you should never have to replace it. I use one well until i buy one of tash's airboxes...

I'd be surprised if the stock filter flows better than a K&N, as it's the typical throw-away paper element. The K&N is a cloth and gauze assembly, which breathes better and can be washed clean rather than replaced.

I know I have the k&n however - it cleans air better but at a cost of restricting airflow vs the stock filter..

Read the link above some pretty conclusive results there....

Quite a surprising result. Having looked at those dyno charts, the only advantage a K&N has is longevity.

Some pretty interesting reading there. Always thought aftermarket filters helped with the airflow.
So going by that I should just stick to a standard filter for road use?

Well theres another link from kzmille on the 1st page of the link i posted which leads to a discussion about aftermarket evostyle/renegade airboxes which dont work to well over stock in the US (due to the warmer temperature of the air- dont understand it fully perhaps griff or someone in the know can explain) however in UK they give good gains over the stock airbox. Tash has a renegade style filter kit so i am gonna get one these i think...

Tash has them for sale in his shop and I will be getting one of these.

Was gonna go for the open air box option, but too poor for one so doing it myself. (Though halfway through cutting up my airbox and i've killed my dremil thingy)

A stock filter will flow better when it is first fitted but will deteriorate quickly, an after market filter will stay consistent longer and as said can be cleaned.
