After fire/ flames out exhaust, black smoke... ?

Did ye ever change the plugs out for new.....seem tae mind ye said didnae do the front one.

From an experience heres a possibilty?......ma youngsters SV650 ( wee V twin) started stutterin, wi the front cylinder droppin off and on but only very intermitently at first so just felt a bitty rough and seemed more certain revs ( yer flat spot?). As a result neat unburnt fuel was passin thru and actually igniting in the headers and exhaust and was a bit reeky and sootin up the can.

Turns oot it was the front plug failing (which finally gave up the ghost totally so it was running on the rear only, which wiz nae fine on a wet pissin doon night when yiv jist stepped aff the IOM ferry!)

On the SVs the front cylinder plug is wide open tae the wet and awe the road **** so was pretty corroded.

A brand new set o plugs sorted it and its ran fine ever since.

Jist a theory so dinnae shoot me.

Hi, been a while, sorry- busy, been having starting problems now too. Anyway, finally got a new plug puller, and with gusto managed to get them loosened. They were all .85mm instead of 6/7mm, changed them to 6.5, good startup now, will see how it does for the next few days, feeling good about it. Finally stripped the whole thig down too, which is never a bad thing... As for the dealer, will think twice next time, seems self-servicing could save a lot of problems.

Hope ye get a result long term min....dae ye think the dodgy plug wiz the source o yer stutterin an black reek?

So far so good. Starting fine, and not noticing the 'black reek'. It's guesswork, but I can imagine how weak or somehow intermittent sparking could leave fuel unburnt. I hope this is a solution. Pretty confident that all is well now. For the record, my last bike was an SV, I too fell fowl of the poor front spark plug protection/position.
