Hi All
i was cleaning my bike at the weekend and came across something that concerns me greatly,
Has anyone else had a similar find??

Ohlins forks, over tightening of spindle securing bolts. Few threads (no pun intended) on here if you search.
 
As above seen a few posts about this on Ohlins forks. Funny I've had 2 milles but never an 'R' . My showa forks have never skipped a beat but I've heard loads of tales of leaking seals and cracks like yours from the ohlins kit. I'm no expert but I reckon the showa kit is better suited to real world/road riding.
It's a shame really that they've cracked because it was probably due to over tightening and avoidable.
Funny thing, ignorance is bliss....I bet in a strange way you wished you'd never spotted it!
 
i had an 'r' before this one and had trouble with the fork seals i don't think the Ohlins likes being stood, must have been overtightened by some hand fisted baffoon i think they are only 22 n/mtrs........ personally i use a torque wrench, the joys of a motor trade background.
Hadn't seen any other threads about it but new to all this.
@Wizbit you know it, but those photos were taken on Saturday morning i took more when i got home after about 80 miles an i think one has got bigger. Just as well as it was me it has happened to, and not someone who is less observant, good bloody job for waranties i say, i think two new ones are order of the day............

Lacarnie, Sorry fella but you've become the victim of a bodge mechanic/tyre fitter. Common fault is that these dead heads usually whack the torque setting (if indeed they have a torque wrench) to 22nm which is for Showa's. Ohlins state 12nm but I've always gone for 10nm with no problems. Short answer is that both castings will need replacing which will knock you back £250 to £280 per leg. DON'T get them welded, would you trust a weld on a front wheel clamp, I wouldn't !!

happens quite often but i do not believe it has anything with the tightening torques. it just happens. not to blame a mechanic.
 
cheers Spooky for pointing out my mistake on the torque settings, it states 12 in the book ;) good job the bike has a waranty only had it 2 months
 
Sorry Ruck got to disagree with you. I've had an 04 from new and no problems, i have always done my on servicing and tyre changers. In the past six years I have had over seven sets of Ohlins repaired for a few guys off both forums and every single one had these pinch bolts over torqued. Also I'm good friends with a qualified Ohlins tech here in England who could confirm that this problem is caused purely by heavy handed over tightening.

thats handy to know S cause i'm just starting to pressure the dealer i brought it from about what to do about it he 'has to talk to aprilia about it'........so we will see

And just to confirm, this issue is not present on non-R series bikes? (2003 Mille, in this case)
 
never had a problem with my showas. 2 milles and a futura. to be honest the second mille is mainly a track-bike and it's got ohlins on for about two years (i think) and they don't have this problem either. but yet again, i own a motorcycle shop and i DO use torque wrenches almost religiously! :)

oh, almost forgot: two close friends of mine also have standard mille's and do the maintenance at my shop. no problems either.
 
As SPOOKY said more to do with an inept mechanic/spanner monkey than somebody who actually knows what their doing. Loud Les had this exact problem with a certain wrexham parts/mods place. they cracked his mates
 
As been said, common problem :roll the guy that owns my local Aprilia dealership told be that one years ago, it's one of the first things to look for on the R version, deffo caused by muppets :biggrin
 
just looked at mine last night ive got a crack in each of my ohlines for ive got a rsv 2008 one is realy bad all the way across would have put back together if not for this thread takenmy forks to an aprilia dealer they are looking into it as they know about this problem so not an isolated thing
 
ps was told by a ohlins dealer that aprilia was told about this problem as the bolt holes were to small and that was the problem for the cracks and that they had to change the moulds to stop this happning but they did nothing so not just to do with tightening the bolts up more than that

So Aprilia were told by Ohlins that the forks they had manufactured were defective & Aprilia did nothing, how can the bolt holes be too small when the Allen bolts fit perfectly. I find that hard to believe, more likely muppet mechanics just trying to pass the buck. The ali casting is quite delicate & you do the bolts up twice as much as reccomended & somethings gonna break & it's unlikely to be the steel bolts.

There is quite a complicated sequence to re-fitting the front wheel which not alot of people including dealership mechanics do & this more often leads to binding brakes, blown fork seals & this problem.
