Hi all,

Great looking forum. Just thought I'd say hello and post my tale of woe.:exclamation

Just picked myself up my first V-twin at weekend - a 2001 RSV mille with 9000 miles on it - which I'm really liking. The bikes that odd blue colour, bit like marmite suppose you either love it or hate it.

Anyway, having spoke with the seller he told me about the checking the oil hot procedure, which I've read about since. Like a right :jack I did not check the oil level before I rode away . Tonight I decided to check the oil level which I couldn't see in the tube, so I removed the side panel and ended up adding 1 litre of oil , the level now sits just over half way on the tube.

I'm now worried sick about the motor and not having owned a vee before, every single thump has me thinking big-end bearings. :puke . When I rev the motor there is no blue smoke or nasties.

Any comments would be much appreciated.

Cheers, Tony

Hello tonym.dont worry to much about the noises from the engine"they all do that".the aprilia lump is a noisey old thing anyway,as for having to put 1 litre of oil in hhmmmm seems strange as you said the seller told you how to check the oil level properly so why didnt he :dunno.

Hi Tony and welcome to the forum sir :thumbup

You need to check the oil after a good run out, around 10-20 miles to get the engine up to temperature. Then adopt the "i've not broken down, i'm just checking my oil pose" at the side of the road holding the bike as level as you can whilst you peer at the tube for a couple of minutes.

The engines aren't the quietest of things, but I doubt you have anything to worry about sir. Take it easy after adding the litre, hopefully you won't of added too much. What oil type did you use? What was recommended to you by the seller?

hello there:pirate lot of avice on here don't worry about the noise you'll soon come to love them just had a panick and thougt i needed new front brake disc until i serched for brake judder works a treat what i read:thumbup

wouldnt worry to much mate, mine had way to much oil in it when i bought it,and it was the wrong grade, like piss water and was making the clutch slip and blowing oil back into the air box.i was a bit worried at first, but dropped the oil,put the right grade in,and more importantly, the right amount, dropped the clutch fluid and bled the clutch and shes as good as new.
dont waste time worrying about every little noise and rattle,(take some getting use to the noises and vibes after an IL4).
just check everythings ok now, levels no more than half way up when the engines hot,if your not sure of the oil thats in it,drop it and put 15w 50 i think it is,so you know its rightand ride the crap out of it mate.

Ok thanks for the replies - you've eased my worries....felt sick when I saw the low level.

I checked the oil with the engine hot tonight after perhaps a 25 minute spin. The thing that had me worried was the fact that a full litre only brought the level to a nads over midway between Max and Min, and was hence about 3/4 litre low on oil??

I just added some semi-synthetic (think 10W-40) that was in the shed (left-over from my previous 4 potter). I'll change the oil at weekend, just ordered a new k&n oil filter off e-bay.

So these motors are pretty robust?

Is the recommended oil semi -syn and not fully syn.?

Apologies for all the questions and thanks again.

Cheers

I wouldnt worry too much, with our RSV's being dry sump IMO the can run longer than a regular wet sump with low oil. We have 2 pumps so keeping up with the oil demand is easier then with a regular wet system. plus if you run a wet sump too low it will suck air and really starve the engine.

Personally I would just watch it to see if the oil level changes drastically between rides (meaning that something might be knackered)

I use mobil 1 full synthetic and seems to be working great for my bike.

As above, but get a friend to hold bike upright while you check the oil, very easy to misjudge and drop the bike.. Me:eek:

welcome to the zone :cheers 1 litre short? I think you'll be ok, you weren't doing any wheelies were you?

-:banana

The correct way to check the oil level is to ride the bike for a minimum of 15 to 20 minutes and get everything up to temperature. Stop somewhere safe and flat and switch off the engine. Immediately hold the bike upright and check the oil level in the sight tube. It should be no more than 2/3 the way up the sight tube. Any more and oil will be forced into the airbox. The correct oil as recommended by Aprilia is 15w50 Semi Synthetic motorcycle oil such as Sylkolene Comp 4, Rock Oil Guardian Sigma, Putoline Sport 4 or Agip Tec 4t.

Nope.....not too high anyways:thumbup

Thanks again for the advise and the warm welcome.

just for a piece of additional info, my 07 with the level at 2/3 min/max when hot, is just visible in the sight glass when cold. this allows me to quickly check prior to a ride just for piece of mind.:thumbup

most of us use semi synthetic oil mate.
from what ive read, you can suffer a slipping clutch with full synth.
aprilia recommend semi synth anyway,as legs said.

Thanks again.

I'll get some silkolene and am just waiting for my oil filter arrive, then I'll take her for a nice long thrash this weekend.....weather permitting :roll

Cheers
