Since having the bike (about 6 months) I never thought the battery was turning the starter over very well. however it allways started up. battery allways on optimate.
Last week failed to start first time then made a clanking noise secon d time and started third time ok.
I panicked thinking of screwed sprag clutch and bought a beefier battery the same day.
Next day with new battery fitted it made a very small clanking noise but started.
The next few times it started fine.

Could it be a dodgy starter solenoid?

Does anyone know if the sprag will be knackered or shall I just wait and see?
Could it go suddenly and leave me stranded?

Thanks in advance

George

I can't help with the sprag, but if you do want to test the solenoid you can unbolt the two thick wires from the solenoid and press them together to bypass the starter switch and solenoid.

My starter switch went (the contacts were corroded) and all it would do was make the starter motor do a fairly loud clicking noise. Bypassed solenoid and button with the above method and started fine.

George,

Tash can supply the parts as he is going to get mine for me when this bike finally arrives! Im going to do mine myself.

Are you handy with a spanner? because I believe Grif is comming up with his mobile workshop at some point.

Griff uses a Bmw sprag which is a lot cheaper than the oem part. worth giving him a shout if you don't have a heat gun/torch and a puller for the flywheel.

Ive got all the gear except a puller. Anyone point me in the right direction to buy the right one?

Cheers

Andy

thanks for info.
Bike has started fine the last half dozen times so gonna see how it goes.
If it starts clunking or making wierd noises then I will change sprag

George

before you go replacing the sprag (this is all ways the panic thing owners do) i would replace the solenoid i replaced mine with the recommended yamaha one and my mille spins over like a jap four and for less than £20.
