Last week i had booked with a mate an advanced rider day, good weather and all was set. Anyway on the second observced ride my mate managed to hit a car !! I was riding at the front so saw nothing just got a radio message. I rode back to find his 6 month old fully faired bandit was in pieces in the middle of the road, and he was lying motionless on the verge, not a good feeling. Anyway he was ok, he had to have surgery on his foot to reset the bones and broke his collar bone.
To lighten this a bit when i got to A&E he was being undressed by 3 nurses and when the doctor came to ask what happened he told her he was on a course to become a safer rider !!
His concerns in order were 1. his bike, 2. calling his wife, 3. his foot.
Finally i wear a textile jacket and half leather trousers. He was in full leathers and i have to wonder if i would have got the same level of protection. He had clear scuffs etc on his jacket but no damage to him, any thoughts?

I've generally abided by 'good gear is cheaper/better than a wheelchair'. Morose.....moi?

I wouldn't like to put them to the test, but why can't yer wear textiles on a track day ???

Glad he is ok pikeman, half the battle with any riding gear is finding something you are comfortable in which offers a decent amount of protection. How often do you follow / see riders out riding continually farting about rearranging themselves. Any time you are not comfortable you are probably not concentrating on the job in hand, bit like when you get cold.

I think its because textiles dont slide too good on tarmack. How often do you see racers lowside then slide across the track, then get up and walk away?Textiles tend to 'dig in' and fling the wearer like a rag doll.Textiles can tear easier too.I know this from crashing a big 'ol Cagiva on a diesel soaked roundabout.:rolleyes

Anyone remember those kevlar racing suits?Looked a bit like a giant babygrow!Popular with sidecar passengers coz they were very supple and allowed a lot of movement.I think they are only used by speedway riders now.

Keith, that wis the point I was trying to make.

SSDJ - sobering stuff. I wear a textile jacket in the winter for the warmth but April - October always wear full leathers, either one or two piece. The missus is on at me to buy a back protector, after looking at those pics I'm starting to think it may be a good idea.

Alpinestars 1 piece for me, crashed in it twice and can confirm you still get friction burns and sore elbows! ouch.

good god...i still to this day go on big days out with jeans and trainers and a little coat with no protection..just helmet and gloves !
I keep sayin every year to myself.."go get gear, go get gear"...deffo gettin leathered up this time ! big time !...thanks to the link above , its prolly saved my life....

Looks like most people are leather bound this weekend!! I will say one thing though, safer kit dont make safer riders. yes its not always the riders fault but there are other factors to take into consideration.

I have said for years that if you want to be safe in a car, dont buy a range rover or volvo, take the airbag out and stick a great big spike in its place.

So chris, there may be more logic than you think to your jeans and trainers approach

Christ pinny I don't feel 100% safe with full leathers on by a long shot. I like to think I'm a fairly sensible rider. In the car I've slowed down a lot since my crash and driving to and from work quite happily pop it in cruise control at 55mph on the Abergavenny to Brecon run.

Trouble is you can afford a slip in a car but if your Tyres slide on a bike you're either off or thinking ***** that was a close one

Ah wid say leathers every time but ah reckon it's mair aboot whit ye hit or don't hit is the key tae serious injury or no, ahv crashed wi jeans oan an walked away wi jist grazes cos awe a did wiz slide tae a stop but huv also crashed wearin proper leathers an ended up wi a a smashed tib n fib o left leg cos the thing that stopped me wis the front o Ford Capri 2.8i...

You are spot on there Rico, not much you can wear to put you on a par with a 2.8 ford capri....

Ye jist need tae see whit happen tae Nobs brother as a perfect example o whit ahm sayin.....
