Tried to start my mille saturday morning cos the sun was out....... bastard thing didn't want to know.

The engine turns over fine (new battery and on optimate 24/7) but the bike just wont start. Dont think it a fuel problem as the exhaust smell in the garage was definately 'petroly' after several failed attempts. Tried again this morning still the same except I now have a clicking noise as the engine turns over?

Before this weekend the bike was becoming more and more tempramental to start and now it just wont.

After I heard the clicking I stopped trying, The bike has 16k on the clock and fsh.

Anyone else had this problem or has any idea how to fix it?

Any advice much appreciated.

Doh! That is an important piece of info.... On the new style, it is on top of the battery..

First off, make sure your battery is good, if not replace it, the clicking is the solenoid due to your battery not having enough power, once your battery is good, close the fast idle completely and turn the throttle once to the stop and hold it there, then try to start it, be ready to shut the throttle quickly if and when it fires up, only try and start it in short 4/5 second bursts (but keep the throttle open) or you will damage the sprag clutch.

If this does not work then ask again telling us what happened.

Thanks everyone...............I'll give your suggestions a try. Hopefully I'll be back on the road soon and will stop looking on ebay for an sp1 ;-)

i had exactly the same thing with my 01 - turned out the battery was fuxored. I upgraded to a ytx14 and its all good now.

my battery is only a week old YTX14, that was the first thing I replaced having read all about other people's problems.

Just started the bike today, first try................bastard thing!

I just gave it full choke, no throttle and pushed the starter (one last chance before the full throttle trick). The exaust pumped out a bit of smelly blueish smoke for about 30 seconds then settled down to normal.

Is it possible that I had flooded it? I have had this expirience with other older bikes but left to stand for 15 mins they usually start ok. My mille refused all weekend.

could have been flooded i guess - though seems strange it took so long to sort itself. are you sure your choke is retruning correctly?? ive had a prob with my bike cover catching the choke and holding it on which makes it a bitch to start.

Anyway, glad its going again!

I think the choke is returning but I'll check it out........thanks for the advice.

Its nice to know I'm not alone!

It was flooded, the blue smoke is too much petrol getting into the bores and washing them, resulting in the blue oil smoke you saw, there is no choke on these bikes it is simply a fast idler as they are fuel injected.

If it does it again, do as i said in my above post, these bikes are prone to this trait now and then.:thumbup

Thanks everyone............. one last thing, when you say 'close the fast idle completely do you mean put it full on or leave it off?

lol, how very pedantic!! it is a variable, cable adjusted fast idler (now i sound like McLaren's Ron Dennis) - which to my eye is a choke?? :nana

anyway, ensure its returning properly becuase it can cause over fuelstation << i made that word up for good meansure

Made me chuckle :biggrin

as if in sympathy of your bike Paul380 mine wasnt having any of it this morning. Had to charge the battery - its only 10 days old!! and then it didnt want to start, took some grief to get it going. I HAVE GOT TO STOP PUTTING OFF GETTING AN OPTI lol.

I also suspect my plugs may be fouled, making it struggle to start, so i think i best change em. Are they quite easy to get to??

Yep.........haynes manual and probably a fresh set of plugs for me too.

One is a bit tricky just loosen off the airbox and shift it over, unless you have dainty hands :devious
