180 section rear tyre instead of 190, what difference?

hey all, just noticed that my bike has a 180 section rear tyre instead of the standard 190. just wondered what difference that will be making in terms of handling and feel. i assume it helps it turn in, only problem is i had noticed that sometimes it feels more like its 'falling' in, rather then me making it turn. i prefer to man handle the bike a bit and throw it around but ive had to adapt my riding a lot so far. wondered if nxt time i need a tyre if i put it back to standard this will be a bit slower to turn in but suit my style a bit better? cheers all

The difference depends on the profile of the 190 you fit. If it is a 190/50 the 180/55 will turn in quite a bit quicker. If it's a 190/55 the difference is not that much. I have never had a grip issue on a 180 so don't need the bigger contact patch from a 190. Plus it weighs/costs more.

For me it's a 180/55 all the way but as with anything tyre related, every rider will have a preference

180 is standard, on my '02 anyway. Some people get on better with a 190, personally the 180 is what its designed for, so i stick with that. ;)

is the 180 standard? mines an 02 rsvr. only reference i checked was the haynes manual and that said a 190/50 was standard, ive got a 180/55. only other thing i noticed was that there is minimal clearance between the tyre and the chain, even with my 180 on, so looks like a 190 could rub the chain at times?

My rear needs replacing soon. Had a 180 on my 01 mille so might switch back to that.

Currently have a 2CT on the front and a Diablo on the rear.

Can anyone recommend a tyre that gets good mileage? The diablo only lasted 2500miles.

180 is oem on R models, 190 on the others.

The R has lightweight wheels and the lighter tyres compliment them.

aah spoonz, perfect sense. that hadnt even crossed my mind. like a wise old owl you are!

180 is for a 5 1/2 inch rim 190 is for 6 inch rim

Sorry but your incorrect fella. All Rsv's come with 6 inch rims on the rear except for a very few that had 5.5 rims by a mistake at the factory. You can't fit a 190 properly to a 5.5 but both fit a 6"

I have been running a 190 after I left it with my cousin to fit a new tyre last time and he followed the owners manual (previously had a 180 on it) and it has chipped itself away a bit on my chain but no major issues. mines an '02 standard RSV. due to replace soon and will probably replace with the same.

How many people on here have tried a brand new 180 and a brand new 190 same day within a few mins of each other ?? Spoonz this debate started when the 916/748 came out in mid 90's the rim on 748 was smaller but had 180 the 916 had 190. But that was for homologation purposes as they did have a rule about no fitting wider tyres than came as standard . I believe world supersport still had this.as the.R6 had a lower profile front and couldnt put a 120/70 on for extra edge grip .

The debate was always a clearer one until the 190/55 tyre came along. Same profile as the 180 but bigger contact patch- best of both worlds hence why Aprilia fitted it to the very late Rsv Factory models instead of a 180/55. The only negative is it weighs a fair bit more but not that it really matters that much in the real world.

The older style 190/50 i have used back to back. Makes the bike much more lazy as you are knocking 5mm off the ride height of the rear. I found it gave me a front end push feel at full lean but it may just need getting used to. I went back to the 180 at the time.

My current bike has 5.5 rear rim so 190 not really an option.

My 03 RSVR came standard with 180 but I've run 190/55 ever since with no issues

have run both on my 02 R and noticed little difference the original owners manual says i can fit either
