After reading a few posts I decided to go from stock 17/42 to 16/44 gearing. So ordered chain and sprockets from Tash which promptly arrived (thanks Tash)

Took the ape for a test ride on sunday and i thought it was quick before but it feels awesome now got to be the best mod i have done so far on the bike. It just feels more natural with this gearing whereas before it sometimes felt lumpy maybe aprilia should have supplied 16/44 as standard....

suits a V4 too Ck!!

got the chance to Taz a APRC around with that gearing combo....more than i can handle! :doug

Thinking 15/42 as i have a new 42t stealth supersprox rear sprocket here so front and chain to buy.
Should be similar to 16/44 i;m thinking.

Have a look at this website if you haven't already, great for checking what differences get made. Looks like the 15/42 is quite different to both stock and 16/44... Not sure what the perceived midrange boost would be, let us know how you get on!!

Removing a disgustingly neglected chain and wheel set from the bike, I see the previous owner has fitted a 15/42 set up ( over 17/42 stock I think )
The guy selling it me complained that it was aggressive on the throttle and a wheelie monster, hence his "brief encounter" and sale to me ! Now I know why it has such bad manners ! :devious

Gearing Commander.....excellent !

im running 15/44 but thats all ive tried as it came on the bike. i thought it might have been a bit more leary......

Well im going down the 15/42 route over winter and look forward to the first ride out in spring.
Want to get the wheels repainted while i'm on with it as well,oh and change fork oil and get forks anodized and and....................

I've got standard geating at the moment but am thinking of going -1F and +2R . Could this be too aggressive ?

Iain, that's the perfect thing to go for, probably the best mod you can make as far as bang for buck goes. I did it with the last RSV I had and am about to do it with the current one, makes a huge difference!

It doesnt make the bike feel snatchy just more ?eager?

Just continue to treat the bike with some respect and theres no problem, your just getting better acceleration for the price of a little top end. Nothing to be concerned about, its a good mod.

Hope you don't mind me butting in here but im curious as to how much real world top end Id lose from standard gearing to -1f +2r on a 2002 mille. Ive viewed that gearing website before but real world experience is normally quite different to calculations I reckon, cheers Dave

running 14/44 mine topped out at 152mph on the dyno. i know its not real world on the roads but cant be far out

Thanks for the reply. Just good to get an idea of the compromise . Might give this a bash next time they due for replacement

i take it does not efect the speedo want to do some thing with mine as jerks to much in town whitch is the best way to go

Zubes, if it's jerking around town when you're rolling the throttle on and off then you may need to get the throttle bodies balanced, as that is quite a common occurrence. Changing the gearing doesn't make it less jerky, it stops you needing to slip the clutch as much when rolling around in traffic and makes the bike accelerate faster.

I run a 15/42 combo which on the back straight at Snetterton means I loose out (but not much in real terms) what I gain from the acceleration ( out of far more corners ) is far better, later braking also levels the playing field. I think in real terms you loose far less as on the road due to top end not being used as often as the acceleration !!!!!
Play and have fun with every squeeze.....rather than the pub talk of riding at top speed everywhere..it's not top trumps !
