Hi- I have a loan of a low mileage ( 12 k miles) 03. Fancy buying it to mark my 50 th year on planet Earth. Fresh, starts on the button and I like it. A lot. Have a BMW k1200lt for the long stuff. Fancy the Tuono for weekend spins. Never had an Aprilia before. What should I look out for/ expect in a bike this age ? Great forum by the way!!

The 03-05 bikes are pretty bombproof,....you could ask the owner if the starter solenoid and battery have been upgraded and what gearing is fitted. The original solenoids are weak and can fail. Also the bikes are very high geared as standard, they perform far better with lower gearing.

Thanks Keith. I will do as you suggest - and am pleased to hear they are bombproof as I don't want to get into anything needing ongoing attention or lacking in reliability.

It's an Aprilia, you have to keep on top of the basics, my 03 was a cracking bike. Enjoy.

Had my 03 for 3.5yrs - not many problems at all after about 10k miles.

Rear suspension needed sorting, front disks needed replacing. That's it really, as peeps have already said very reliable :thumbup

Oh, and I'm **** at spannering as well.

Well the chaps have said it all, great reliable bike once you do all the basics as per Keiths post and I reckon just cleaning and gapping the plugs every 3000 miles makes a world of difference. Otherwise keep it on an optimate and give it fuel and tyres you will be a happy dude.

Thanks to all for your help. I am going to go for it ( on my return from Sardinia where I am holidaying as part of the recent birthday celebrations). Saw a couple of double level articulated trucks with Harleys on pallets from Germany earlier. Unloading for the owners to ride without the hassle of trans European riding. Keeps the Harleys shiney too.

Hey Stix - thanks. When you say the rear needs sorting , what do you suggest? I have avoided any lumpy roads as it seems hard and I haven't played with the settings yet.

He had the dogbone sorted out, they need greasing, maybe once a year as a winter job. Plenty of advice regarding that on here.

Rear suspension had seized, they had to dismantle buy some new bits and stick it all back together basically. Can't remember what bits were nackered, not a lot just needed taking apart really.

There are a lot of threads on doing the dogbone bearings, have a good read before you try and DIY. Otherwise call our favourite Aprilia specialist......ahh Ireland.....err read carefully and get a skilled mate to help!! :thumbup

Luckily, I have a skilled mate! Any idea on a problem that has arisen out of the blue? Electrical failure, time clock re-set to zero. Happened when riding, stuttering on and off until total fail. Came back itself.....

Try the connectors for the hand controls, white block connectors. make sure the pins havent pulled out.
