I keep my bike on an optimate charger & the light is green. Went out to the garage on Saturday to start it up, disconnected the charger, switched on the ignition, gave it full choke but no throttle & hit the start button...... Turning over fast, splutted a bit but wouldnt start. Tried it a couple of times, then it smelt of petrol so presumed i had flooded it.
Put it back on charge, showing orange light & left it.

Back out to the garage Sunday night, green light on the charger, disconnected it, gave it half choke but no throttle, hit the button, cranking over fast but wouldnt start. Tried it a couple of times then it started smelling of fuel...... Flooded again!
Put it back on charge, showing orange light & left it.

Back to garage Monday night, green light on charger, disconnected it, no choke & no throttle then hit the button, cranking over fast but wouldnt fire up. Gave the throttle a blip whilst cranking.... no joy. Added a bit of choke, cranking slowed down a bit but wouldnt fire up. Tried a few times then stunk of fuel...... Flooded again!

Back out to the garage tonight, blah-blah-blah-blah-blah-blah-blah-blah-blah-blah-blah!!!!
Put it back on charge, showing orange light & left it!

Question !: How much cranking can this bike take before i do it some damage?
Question 2: Is there a guaranteed success rate procedure for starting these beasts up?

Never had issues with starting on all the other makes of bikes ive had.

Question 3: Whats an 02 RSV Mille worth because if the b@st@rd dont start soon im gonna torch the f@cker!

Ive disconnected the tip switch, cleaned connectors, gave it a tap & refitted it. Stil no joy.

It just seems to flood after about 10 seconds of cranking over?

Make sure the bike is priming the fuel pump then make sure the bike has spark going to the plugs & that you have the tip over switch the right way up & check that one of the main fuses by the baterry are not blown ....

Replied to a similiar post not long ago , if you done it more than twice as your supposed to and it keeps flooding then it aint gonna go . Trick is , just to see if it will fire up is throttle wide open and no fast idle ( choke ) . This worked all the time for me but dont keep using this method as it will damage the sprag. Try a quarter of fast idle , this again is working for me now the temps are higher .

When i turn the ignition on the fuel pump primes ok. Tip over switch all ok & both fuses by battery are also fine.
I tried to fire her up again tonight with no choke & no throttle put wouldnt fire up. After a couple of attempts it stunk of fuel. Removed all 4 spark plugs, soaking with petrol.
I will clean & gap them over the weekend, check for sparks, chuck them back in & try again...... Fingers crossed!

I'm on my second RSV mille and had exactly the same problem. I keep mine on an optimate and the green light would always get me excited but the thing was becoming more and more of a b1tch to start. Really depressing. presumed all was good as the bike was very similar to my first one. Thought I would change the plugs. A bit closer to starting but still no joy. Gave in and bought a new YUASA battery and bingo - it's the battery every time. Think of it like a rechargeable battery on any other type of appliance - they all fail to retain charge eventually. The Ape pulls a huge amount to start up compared to IL4's. Don't pay more than £55 for a new Y14BS battery and the problem will go away. I'm feeling your pain!

No choke and no throttle will work on a warm engine but not really on a cold one . Before taking plugs out , try the no choke / full twist of throttle method . . You will probaby have do it a couple of times. If that does not work then looks like you need to dig deeper . Like you I'd put mine on the optimate for a couple of nights but it did not make any difference in the colder weather .

had same prob. put new battery on and still wouldnt start. Tried full throttle no choke thing. Worked first time. And now starts fisrt time.

Having the same issue with mine rsvr 02 and it happens intermittently. For example If I rode bike in fine weather yesterday and this morning is dump - there's no chance this motherfuker will start. I think dampness affecting bloody thing somehow. It spins the engine very strong but won't fire up. Then I'd leave it for a day and it normally starts next day without any problems. WTF ? There's new 14 battery in it, upgraded rectifier, no side stand switch.

does the bike need a YTZ14BS battery? ive had a YTZ12BS fitted by a aprilia dealer but im still having same issues as all these "not starting threads" ive even had new plugs fitted and still have the same problem

I have 14 YTZ 14 BS battery it starts perfectly most of the times but then some times it won't. In a last month it was refusing to start on Wednesdays - absolutelly mad ****, and I can't figure out what is going on, I use this bike every day for comuting to work and it failed to start 3 Wednesdays in a row (the rest of the days it starts fine !!!) so I had to take car, get late to work and get earfull of **** from boss. Absolutelly gutted. I am actually planning to take Wednesdays off and work Saturdays instead becasue my bike doesn't want to start on Wednesdays !

Ok, I am suspecting slight coolant leak inside the head, which probably causing moisture bulid up on the plugs when bike is not in use for more then 12 hours. I've noticed collant in expansion tank is gone ! Will top up coolant try to start her and if started then will leave over night an check plugs in the morning to see if there's any moisture built up un them.

My Mille already has a YTX14BS 12v12AH battery fitted mate.

Shouldnt the 'YTX14BS' battery be a 14Ah ?? 14Ah is what you want, 12Ah is standard, just double check dude make sure we've got right battery first ?
If its spinning over strong/fast and not sounding like its gonna die after one or two prods of the button i'd say battery is ok and its something else to do with the setup .... air/fuel ... plug gap ... etc etc

Its recommended mate. The 12Ah are standard but the 14Ah turns the engine over faster and stronger which helps you keep your sprag in one piece. This winter i've run another earth lead to starter, uprated the starter solenoid, re-made the starter cable ends and made sure it was all clean, and uprgraded to a racing battery. hopefully all my starting issues are gone
